PostSubject: Illegal to consume alcohol in restaurant without liquor license   Sat Aug 23, 2014 11:21 pm

I was told by a friend that he was stopped from having his own whiskey at a food outlet by the owner. The owner said that it was legal to consume as they don't have a license.

I thought license was required only if they sell or serve alcohol but it the patron brings their own - also cannot?

Anyone knows what is the law or rules on this as it sounds a bit ridiculous.

I think jmchan was trying to gather info here, he posted under Lounge section so should be fine for general discussion?

Anyway, I asked my fren who runs a small eatery and he said that as far as he knows, they are not allowed to let customers consume alcohol in their premises. One consideration is for Muslim patrons?

I was curious on this too. Found this from google:
http://www.spf.gov.sg/licence/frameset_LL.html

There seem to be 2 categories of license. So basically, if understood correctly, cant BYO unless u also have a retail license to sell and consume on premises.

Generally most clubhouses in the golf course charge `corkage fee' if BYO.

When they are not allowed to let customer consume alcohol in their premises, regulations set by the eatery owner or by law? Many hawker centres in Singapore serve alcohol although there Malay Muslim stalls around. I guess its not the law but regulations set by the shop owners.

Sorry if my query was inappropriate but I thought the lounge was for any topic - including none golf topics. I am just trying to understand the rules ... it would be the most restrictive rule for F&B if customers are not even allowed to consume their own alcohol when the outlet does not have a license.

I have not experienced this restriction anywhere else in the world. I researched the SPF web site and it does not cover this scenario but I guess SPF have many unwritten/unpublished rules.

Yup bro, SPF website does not cover such scenario,i guess it is more of a control measure by the restaurant/shop owner. Some stall only allow you to consume what you buy from them. Just like any other eatery that state: "NO OUTSIDE FOOD ALLOWED". They pay the rent, they maintain, manage the place, i guess they have every right to to allow or not to allow.  Very Happy

This is the closet I can see on consumption at premise.

Extension Hours Liquor Licence
Subject to any extensions granted by the Liquors Licensing Board, every licensed premises shall not remain open beyond the licensing hours stated in the licence, unless it is to be used for any purpose other than the sale and consumption of intoxicating liquors. Under the Customs Act, it is an offence to sell intoxicating liquors or to allow consumption of intoxicating liquors after the stipulated closing hours and it carries a maximum fine of $5,000.
