PostSubject: Hazard rule - water hazard behind the green   Fri Feb 13, 2015 2:57 pm

With reference above image, what will be the proper action to take under both scenario A and scenario B? is there a difference?

Under Scenario A, am I allowed to drop at point A1 under 1 stroke penalty or should I drop at point A2? Same question for Scenario B.

I just dont find the USGA rule 26 to be providing adequate understanding for me in above scenarios.....

I don't think you can drop at A1 and B1, because it would be nearer to the hole, and A2 and B2 are like

My guess would be far left or right before the lateral water hazard. you draw a straight line from the pin to point of ball entry to the water. And from there you will draw a arc to the left/right, until you have enough space to take your shot.

correct me if I m w....    not from par 3

"within two club lengths of where the ball last crossed the margin of a lateral water hazard but not nearer to the hole"

but in this case its nearer to the hole. guess to satisfy your serious kakis , drop somewhere nearby not nearer to the hole with a penalty.

thanks bro @eyz4eva, but to my understanding if it's within 2 club lengths (i.e the water hazard is curvaceous then that's fine. but in above case whereby i delibrately drew a flatter entry point, then within 2 clubs length and not nearer to the hole would be virtually impossible. Hence im wondering if the best practice/correct thing to do would be to drop at A2 or B2 for both scenarios, or take a shot where you last played before entering hazard...)

Any one else have a definitive ruling to this?

oh yah, forgot about the 2 club length. then A2 and B2 seems like the only options left. since the illustration i saw had had one of the ball drop points across the lateral water hazard.

water in hazard is bad already, and now you have to take a ball drop and hit across the water again!

hehe

Man never did think of this before... If play money then drop at A2/B2 I guess.. if not just drop A1/B1 la.

To add fuel to the fire, most courses i play at that have water behind green, especially a par 3, there would be a designated drop zone.

First on has to establish Is this a water hazard (yellow) or lateral water hazard (Red)? Options if water hazard (yellow) are,

1. Play the ball as it lies (no penalty)
2. Go back to original spot and replay
3. Drop a ball behold the water hazard, keeping in mind the last point where the ball last cross the margin of the hazard.

Lateral water hazards have an addition two options.

Drop a ball within 2 club lengths

1. from where the ball last cross the margin of hazard (not nearer the hole)
2. from a point at the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole.

You can drop at point  A2 & B2. For both WH & LWH. If it's a LWH, A1 & B1 is permitted provided it's not closer the hole. From you drawing, the points should be right of A & B, not left.

Hope this clarifies.

LWH usually runs alongside fairways. And It is definitely A2 & B2.
There's a YouTube on it.....

Hi Peace2903, some courses mark all the WH as LWH. This is primarily to assist social golfers by giving them more options and to speed up play. A good example would be Sembawang Golf Club.

Bro Artloh, thanks for your comments/advice, probably the most satisfactory answer.  i was initially stuck with the wordings on

"you may drop within two club-lengths of, and not nearer the hole than:

  • the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard, or"

But I guess you're right, if one sees the pin as the focal point and movie around the radius of "pin to point where ball last crossed the water margin", then we can see a small area to drop your ball within two club length, as then it will not violate the part on "not nearer the hole than when ball last crossed the margin of the hazard:.

at this point perhaps good to note that if you drop your ball twice and twice it rolls back into the water, you can actually drop, mark the point where first touches the ground and place the ball on the spot and play from there. This has happened on tour before.

Just wanted to bring this up because I was a bit unclear before, and was certain that a good percentage would probably not be entirely certain about this ruling as well.

Anyway, thanks bro Artloh!  Beer

Just to clarify, from your statement : if you drop your ball twice and twice it rolls back into the water, you can actually drop, mark the point where first touches the ground and place the ball on the spot and play from there"

You actually mark the spot that the ball touch the ground on the 2nd consecutive drop and place the ball on the spot.

Cheers

Art, Thks. Tatz y I said usually. I know it's up to club/committee to decide. Actually there's reasons for lateral and normal WH, and the corresponding additional options for LWH right?
