PostSubject: Broken shaft :)   Wed Mar 18, 2015 2:17 pm

I recently went to play in a friendly tournament in Phuket. On the final hole of the last day I took my well loved (and well used!) Ping G25 driver out of the bag to give it one last hit down the fairway.

Well....I got a decent connection and sent the ball on its way but unfortunately the shaft snapped about two-thirds down. My playing partner and opposition had never seen anything like it and the cameraman had also never seen it. Once I get the footage I'll post it here for you to laugh at!

Have any of you guys broken shafts before? If so where would be the best place to replace the club in Singapore?

I'm also thinking of upgrading to a G30 or possibly the new Nike Vapor driver - if anyone has any thoughts on those clubs that would be great!

Cheers,

CM Smile

You can install a new after market shaft at a golf fitting shop.

Think I have experienced it 2-3 times. Once on the course at Warren and was hitting my approach shot when I felt really light after impact. Luckily the head didn't fly into the pond. The other time i can recall was at JCC range when the shaft broke. As it was quite late in the evening, we managed to recover it and it was like at the 60-70m range.

A friend of mine also broke his G25 when teeing off. The ball went one way and the head another, luckily just missing the water hazard. Got it replaced at PING Very Happy

I broke my PING G2 driver at driivng rage many years ago too. Bought it brand new and use for several years.
Now wondering is PING driver shaft material "that bad"? Hmmmmm. Its stock shaft

I also saw a Japanese guy brought in a Ping G25 with a broken shaft at Golf Simply sometime last year. He asked the shop owner to replace the shaft with the original one from Ping ... The shop owner persuaded him to consider an aftermarket shaft instead as the stock shaft purchase from Ping USA is almost the same price as an aftermarket shaft ...

I think Ping stock shaft is questionable ...

Most of the stock shafts are not of a good quality.

Yeah ... except those from Titleist ... Titleist 913 series offer after market shafts (Diamana, Aldila Tour Green, etc.) on their driver/FW woods according to Titleist US Concierge ... Except the Bassara shaft ...

Not sure about the latest 915 series ... Probably the same ... That suggests why Titleist Driver/FW woods are priced more expensive than their competitors and they also do not drop their prices crazily within a short timeframe ...

A reliable source told me TM driver/FW woods (non-TP version) stock shaft cost is only US$10 on average ... Shocked Laughing

Wah! $10 for a shaft is super cheap. I can imagine the quality.

I snapped my G15 shaft at Laguna three years back and it was a week before a competition, imagine how stunned i was hahahahaha. In the end walked away happily with a Fujikura aftermarket shaft, competition went well too Smile

This further attest that Ping stock shaft is questionable ... At least I don't hear TM stock shaft breaks ... But one will not get consistency in TM stock shaft ... It u are a serious golfer and using TM stock shaft currently, I would advise you to replace it with a aftermarket shaft ...

I wonder if high handicappers are be able to discern the difference between an after market shaft and a stock shaft

yes if the difference is great. Like the difference between senior flex and stiff flex is enormous, even me ceiling handicap one also can tell.

thanks for the response. I have often heard that after market shaft have higher stability which minimises dispersion.

i would propose that going for a fitting session should help you streamline the wide variety of aftermarket shafts..

hmm..... I gave up on aftermarket shafts many many years back and have been using stock shafts. Didn't feel any difference all these years nor did i witness a lot of differences in terms of distance and dispersion. Maybe I am lousy, so give me any damn thing also cannot hit.

Agree to going for a fitting session as our swings are all different and that could influence the characteristics of the shaft required. But from past experience some golf fitters are just interested to sell shafts with the highest profit margins - so please beware.

Any aftermarket shaft which is suitable for your game ... Different golfers have different swing DNA. If you are not sure, better to consult a club fitter with device like Trackman, Flight Scope, etc. to determine which type of shaft is suitable for your game ...

dont forget to claim your golf insurance on the broken shaft but do take note of the minimum claim amount. if claim lesser than minimum amount set by insurance company = no claim. i had claimed broken shaft before...take pictures of broken shaft and fill in the claim form.
