I'm curious - do all forged irons feel as good as Mizzies? Is it something which Mizuno has tried to perfect or is it just the feel of forged irons?

I love the feel of forged irons. Too smooth! Smile

I was wondering the same thing. I'm guessing that Mizunos are just popular and appeal to the masses. The Ikasus etc are for the more select crowd. But feel-wise, I suspect that they all feel pretty darn good Smile

Why no one mention bridgestone/tourstage or epon. They got that nice feel.

Sorry, mate. I have a different view on this one. I think these forged clubs make us better players because they "encourage" us to train harder. Most of these forged clubs are less forgiving, thus requiring more time to practice. Therefore we need to train harder and therefore player better.

Miuras are fantastic. But I suppose feel comes not just from the club head but also the shaft as well. I've tried Bridgestones before but Mizunos felt better. If you can hit the blades/semi blades, those feel the best. The cavity backs still feel a little less nice as compared to the semi-blades/blades.

Never tried Epons, Tourstage, Honma.

My 2 cents, guys. Cheers. Merry Xmas.

I'm not sure if Honma are forged, especially the 80" model - CL708.
They are surely softer than Mizuno.

Muira Blades, are pretty damn smooth. Much better than the baby blades version. Callaway X Proto blades are also pretty good.

The only thing working against both of them is that they are >$USD1.5k per iron set and you can get Mizunos customised much less than that price.

Personally, im a craze for forged irons. Was using Mizzies MP60s for awhile before switching to TM R7 Forged (Jap specs). Tried Mizzies MP57s, Honmas,
Bridgestones J33, Miuras and the most memoriable to me now still Epons AF701 which i tested a yr back. The butter soft feel upon impact..its smooth ! tongue

Was in a golf pro shop in Jkt last wk, tested the Epons AF701 and AF 501 again. Almost committed to fitting a new set..lucky manage to stop the poison from flowing into the heart. Else damage will be....... Shocked

But definitely a set of irons to target towards mid/end 2010 hopefully..

Rocky bro, got to disagree with you on this one. It doesnt mean that the clubs are less forgiving, means we train harder. Does it means, if i put the same amount of efforts on a set of forged irons, and a same about of time on a set of more forgiving cast irons, then theorectically, i would be better playing with the cast irons since they are more forgiving?

I have seen very strong players with cast irons. And to be frank, if you have a very good swing, forged irons will be easier than most cast irons, why? because the forged ones allow us to adjust the lie and loft which means, we do not have to adjust our normal setup to cater for the irons. I think whether we want to train harder or not, depends on what we want to acheive at the end of the day. Look at Lee Westwood, Ping irons and i dun think they are forged... and look at what he acheive in 2009. Smile

my humble 2 cents ... i hit some good shots today with my 09 TM Burners ... they felt soft too when i hit them in the center .. maybe not as soft as Mizzy , Miuras or Ikasus ..

I not really bothered if their forge or cast, as long as i can put the ball close to the pins with those irons, they will be good irons.

Very true. Well said, Shotah! Well, Ping irons are customized not by bending but by their dots. red, black, blue, blue-black, etc... so that the lie is customized to the player.

Actually I speak for myself and me only. When I played cast irons I didn't train hard because most of my balls can fly. Not much effort needed and there was no "push" for me to train harder. But when I got forged clubs, they were much less forgiving and needed more attention. So I trained harder. The addictive feel made it easier for me to hit the range too.

One thing I experienced between the cast irons and forged clubs is turf drag. Cast iron clubs I had had wide soles and I couldn't take many divots with it. It sort of bounces off the turf. With the forged clubs, the whole turf comes right off! I used to top the ball alot when I was using the cast iron clubs because of this. I think, in a way, this allowed me to swing better instead of bouncing off the turf, I was driving the ball into the ground.

Just my 2 cents. No right or wrong. I think you made valid good points there as well. I think it's a matter of preference and perception.

Merry Xmas shotah!

Cheers

that's true bro. i did enjoy my cast irons as much as my forged ones now because they both perform as well. It depends. Some people are really big on feel. But there are more important things like forgiveness, playability etc. At the end of the day, if you find a set that works then it's better to keep using it.
