PostSubject: Singapore Golf Clubs Membership   Mon Jan 04, 2010 2:35 pm

Has anyone been in the market of buying Golf Membership recently?
In other words, anyone been analysing the plus and minuses of buying golf membership such as Tanah Merah, SICC, Sentosa & others versus the asking price currently... Which one is more worth it?

Appreciate any of your feedback and comments

golfbear, there is really a couple of factors to consider when it comes to buying a golf membership. But to drop a quick note and answer to your questions;

If you are looking for quality, only to golf and there is no budget constraints, then Sentosa is the one to go for. But if you are looking for a family-friendly club and also with facilities to golf, then you can consider Keppel, Warren, NSRCC or SICC just to name a few. You can also see in the listed choices, the budgeting factor is also very widely ranged.

There is also a factor of whether you are looking to play weekdays or weekends more, this is a minor deal but it does have a small but nagging effect on your life. For instance, if you want to play weekend in the more populated clubs, you have to pre-plan your games and contend with a queuing system to ensure yourself a slot for your weekend games of your preferred choice. As far as I know, SICC and Laguna is one of the best clubs to just drop by during the weekend for the game. SICC has 4 X 18 holes and I guess Laguna is just not as populated due to them only having 1 X 18 holes now, but I have friends who tell me that there is no issue with popping up at the counter on a weekend afternoon and be able to tee off 30 minutes later.

Facilities at a club is also an issue for some folks and as far as I know, SICC, Warren and Keppel and SICC are one of the clubs that has a bigger range of facilities; bowling allies, Karaoke, Mahjong Room, Jackpot Rooms, etc.

You also got to consider if you are going for life membership or term membership. NSRCC and JCC are offering term memberships.

I remember that Golf Digest did have an issue in 2008 with all the listings of the clubs, their facilities, member count and price range. If you can find it, I guess that would be a good place to start.

There is just too much ground to cover on this subject, but if you have any other specific questions, just shoot them here and I will do my best to help.

hi Muar_Chee... thanks for the info so far...

- unfortunately I'm not serving the army, thus, NSRCC is out of the question
- I only get to play on the weekend, while weekdays travelling on business
- I keep hearing bad things about SICC, too many members, difficult to get
slot, and unless you have group of players that also members you wont play
much. On top of all that, it cost just slightly below Sentosa
- Raffles, Jurong and Warren seems to be a good bet
- Tanah Merah, I like playing there, still on the high side in terms of cost
- Laguna, only get to play once, might be a candidate as well

any publications or ways to know the latest open market price for these clubs?

Thanks, daniel

Since we are on the topic of Singapore Membership, can I ask a sort of a dumb question?

Most membership got a 'membership' fee and a 'transfer fee'. If I were to get a Singapore membership, does it mean i got a fork out the membership and transfer fee as well? Can I then sell off the membership? If so, I would assume I can only sell it off based on the current market rate of membership fee rite? The transfer fee will not be taken into consideration right?

Typically, the membership fee is what fluctuates depending on demand etc. The transfer fee is what the club itself pockets when there is a transfer of membership from one person to another.

The person who buys sells the membership usually has to pay the transfer fee.

Once you buy the membership, you should be able to sell it off provided the club has no restrictions otherwise. You can sell off the membership based on the current market rate (i.e. the demand etc). Of course you can try selling it for more than what the market is prepared to pay (or even less) but this depends on whether you can find a buyer.

HI Dan, just go to the Straits Times Classified and you can find the buying and selling price of various clubs on offer under Adv no. 66 Club Membership . Hope that helps.

I'm not promoting any companies or anything, but usually I visit this link to take a look at the latest transacted prices. Or you can refer to the Straits Times classifieds.

The transfer fee is borne by the seller. The buyer just pays the latest transacted price, or agreed price. Hope this helps.

i thought seller will foot transfer fees. am i right?

This is to discourage speculation bcos transfer fee for RCC is around S$21.5k and current market rate for RCC memebership is S$50k so technically, u need to resell RCC memebership at S$70k to break even which is not possible.

u also hv to consider monthly subscription.

Either fork out cash or take a loan. These are the 2 ways.

the seller bears the transfer fee to the club, the buyer pays the transacted price. for investment purposes, clubs like SICC, Tanah Merah and Sentosa hold their values much better than the others. some clubs also charge a F & B minimum spend at say $200, this is to encourage members to use their F & B outlets.

Sorry, my bad. I meant that the person who sells the membership has to pay the transfer fee.

What are the typical terms for such club loans?

If I am not wrong, this would classify as personal short term loan. so the rates would likely to be those on personal loan basis and the repayment period short.

I see... In that case, really not very attractive... cos personnel loan typically charges an arm and a leg:)

Yup, though on occasion, the bank might have some offer for such loans but that is far and few in between. The last one I had heard was from Maybank which offer a loan via a golf broker. That was many years ago...

hi again all...

continuing this topic, what does the role of a Membership broker then? simply meeting the buyer and seller or they have more active role as in taking care of all the paperworks involved? how much do we need to pay them for this assistance? flat fee or percentage of transaction cost?

Thanks very much for all your answers
