hi again all...

continuing this topic, what does the role of a Membership broker then? simply meeting the buyer and seller or they have more active role as in taking care of all the paperworks involved? how much do we need to pay them for this assistance? flat fee or percentage of transaction cost?

Thanks very much for all your answers
Hi Daniel...
I paid a minimal fee to the broker when i bought TMCC.

Was not much as compared to the whole 'package'... Not sure if Buyer & Seller have
to pay for the Broker Fees or not...

Seriously Doubt the brokers can really make a living just earning that minimal fee...

the broker is appointed by the seller, so his commission is paid by the seller, deducted from the purchase price. its usually a flat fee but as the buyer, its not your concern. the broker will advertise, deal with enquiries, negotiations, finalise the contract and get both sides to sign it. he will also contact the club to handle the transfer process/ documentation from seller to buyer. if buyer needs a loan, he will recommend a banker and like the car agent, he will get a commission from the bank for referral.

we only do not pay for buggy fees if we walk the 9 or 18.

we do not have green fees when we play. we just pay buggy fees. approximately $9 per 9 holes.

SICC requires two different long-standing current members to 'sponser you'. You will meet a member candidate commitee to be reviewed if you are 'SICC type person' ($$$ & status). Then you will be invited to a welcome dinner for new members if allowed to join. They even do criminal background checks I was told.

My eldest bro-in-law and his wife joined last year. Hs sponsers were an ex-MD of British Telecom Singapore and the current CFO of SMU (our neighbors).

Good options for those without huge bank accounts and high-staus jobs is Raffles, Warren, JCC, Laguna, OCC, Keppel, even Changi.

If ex-NS, NSRCC or Sembawang CC good options.

Iam happy with the 'clubs without real estate' like MGK, SGA-GC, AA, SSG, etc. Not self-restricted to playing at only one course cos you paying membership fees annually like the regular golf clubs.

I know people who have low handicaps at theior own golf clubs cos they play there every week, but put them on another course much different than their home club and they play badly.

FYI, I wrote the Singapore golf club report for Golf Digest in 2008 which is referred earlier in this thread.

Hi CK

Do you think is it possible for you to PM how to get hold of the report that you had written about sg club membership? Thanks.

And since you're the expert, did your report included investment worthiness of each & every club? From what I've gathered, buying sg club membership for golfing is no longer a necessity as before. More often than not, the buying decisions are mainly based on 'networking' purposes and for certain club such as SICC & Sentosa, some degree of investment consideration. Taking in account the value to fork out for transfer fee, these 2 clubs seem like a better investment bet as the valve fluctuates greatly as compared to the rest.

Then again, purely on the purposes of golfing, times have certainly change, one no longer need to own a club membership to play golf. Maintenance of handicap is easily and widely available by those clubs without estate that you mentioned.

Fully agreed with you that to be a true good player, one has to play in many other courses on a regular basis.

Ya'll will have to contact Ju Kuang, Editor of GDS as the rights to the article belong to Singapore Press Holdings--Magazines.

Maybe they have online archived versions of the article?

Buying golf club membership for investment purposes is not as good as before the currency crises in Asia--never really recovered.

Personally, I would place my money in precious metals.

I bought sivler at USD5, gold at USD300 and platinum at USD500 in 2002-2003, its now over 4x that amount now.

Unfortunately I had to sell everything in 2004 as I moved to Texas for two years and did not want to pay US taxes on them.

Property in Singapore is another better bet than golf course membership in terms of incremental long-term value, IMHO.

Cheers,

CK

Is the article the one with the Course Ratings and all?
Like which has the longest Par3, Par4 or Par5?
Which has the nicest course etc?

I remember that Sentosa was No.1 Course in 2009 followed by TMCC...
If thats the article... I will try to upload the article here as i should still have the magazine!

Suddenly, AED24000 (which is around RM24,000) for 1 year term membership at The Els Club here in Dubai, or the same price and tenure at The Montgomerie, seems pretty reasonable. AED35,000 per annum will get me a membership at the Jumeirah Golf Estates (where there are 2 18-hole courses, with 2 more opening in the next 12-24 months, and is where the Race to Dubai is played)

JonL_TK:

Not sure as it was a long time ago.

I have written about various Singapore golf clubs since for another golf magazine and now about construction sustainability issues.

My memory is not as sharp as it used to be!
