Takeaway and backswing is the 2nd toughest things at the moment for me; the first being having to change my grip! Arghhhh.......major major remodelling going on.

Anybody has a good tip or mental thought to start your golfswing like a forward press etc that you want to share?? Static position or using some sort of motion?

Whatabout takeaway ? One piece/two pieces/right forearm/hands?

My coach's advice:
1) relax
2) look at the ball
3) feel the shot

1. maintain neutral grip on left hand
2. maintain neutral grip on right hand, holding left hand in place
3. hands should hold club firmly but not tight, arms should be loose
4. base of left hand should be around the width of 1 hand from your pants zipper. This is the textbook distance recommended by most coaches
5. initial takeaway is done by the shoulders, not the arms (if you can't get the feel of this right, switch to a wedge or practice chipping)
5. backswing tends to feel 'upright' rather than flat. Since the body is in a slightly bent over position anyway, the feeling of 'upright' really shows up at an angle, which is the correct plane.

Find a full length mirror to practice this. Stand with mirror to your right side. By rotating your shoulders, your arms naturally trace the correct path, whereas if you use your hands to takeaway, you won't be able to 'draw' a straight line on the takeaway.

Great tips...keep them coming.

I'm changing to a neutral grip now. Always so hard to set it right so what i do now is just let my hands drop into place and hang down naturally and just combine them together like clapping hands onto the club (overlapping style). I'm thinking whatever comes naturally biomechanically is what I'm doing to do to.

My new takeaway is not really common unless you are a TGM advocate so I wont discuss it here.... Wink

Another think I'm thinking about when starting the swing is like "feeling" my body in motion from left to right so I am not starting from a static position but more like a pendulum of a clock. Tick tock tick tock. Left right left right. Just a mental thing to help the body feel moving.

Lots of changes hence I am staying away for the course for a while hahahaha.

I have a tendency to let my left hand grip get super strong, then my right hand has to compensate by being super weak. Really messy. I never noticed that I start with neutral, then somehow shuffle my way into a strong grip which my coach's collegue showed me on video. Also guilty of standing super far from the ball until recently.

Swing undergoing major overhaul, the second in 12 months, and my other coach says this is a much better swing -- an evolution from my last one, though he didn't expect this one to come up so soon.

Still a long way from being consistent -- not enough time to game, and left shoulder is seriously busted. Sad

my biggest mistake which i can never seem to fix...right hand backswing like swinging a tennis forehand (use to play when younger). Same also if u are use to a baseball swing, the right elbow goes flying out. My swings will be over the top, outside-in.

The mistake over results in a strong grip to 'fix' the slice (because the hands will be too fast leading to an open face) and many other problems.

Now concentrating on the right arm, especially the elbow

But realise one thing.....i need a proper coach cause too many incomplete (would not say wrong) self swing analysis previously.

To prevent elbow from 'flying out' (I'm guilty of that from time to time), after the shoulder rotation triggers the takeaway, focus on bringing your right forearm up, much like preparing to cane something. That seemed to have stopped the chicken wing problem for me. For now...

yupe. i have this problem of thinking too much. keep questioning myself like that correct or not. maybe like that will be better. in the end, i end up topping, airball and everything that can go wrong went horribly wrong. now i am freeing my mind, just sweep the ball off the ground.

Hi Jehoi

May I ask are you currently taking any golf lesson from any pro ?

If you are not, I would advise you to seriously consider to go for one...

Play golf is about many things that comes together. You have the body setup / alignment, the grip, the upswing, the downswing, the follow thru and many many more..and all these had to work hand in hand together..or sometime we call "Synchronised movement", and a pro on the spot, explaining to you, showing you the swing mechanism and make correction to the swing is very important.

Just my opinion...enjoy the game...

Thinking of getting a coach too. Trying to decide at Fairway Greens, between Lee or Greg...
