No need... But when u see the way they "load" your golf bag up the ferry u might think twice... If your bag is a staff bag ie not stand bag, think its quite ok. Just take a towel to wrap and tie around the neck of the clubs inside bag to minimise knocking and movement.; at least that's wat I do...

As for stand bag, with the way they load the bags, the stands might break accidentally... I personally use a stand bag, hence I used a travel bag for it. Nowadays these travel bags are very cheap some are less than $50. Can checkout Transview, they have one very well padded on, think cost like $39.90 only...

Note that SQ treats golf bags as part of your luggage allowance.

As such, because staff bags usually weigh 5kg, a fully loaded staff bag with 14 clubs can easily get up to 15kg, with a couple of balls, a pair of golf shoes, and practically nothing else in there.

Considering that the luggage allowance is only 26kg for SQ, that leaves you with 11 kg left, and a normal hardcase suitcase weighs 2 to 3 kg already, so that's not much weight left for your other stuff.

However, since a stand bag weighs around 2 to 3kg anyway, adding 1kg of towels and a bag protector (another 2kg) easily puts it in the weight class of a staff bag anyway...

hi Ghoonk,

I spoke to SQ once about golf bags and apparently, they applied a formula for calculating the weight of the golf bad. they do not use the full weight. fyi

I've traveled to play in phuket taking Tiger Airway, the golf bag is charged separately in fact; 2-way... Not sure about SQ though...

I always use a travel bag to protect my golf bag whenever I take the ferry to Batam or Bintan. Its true what JLChong said. They sometimes throw your bag around. It would be so heart ache if your bag is new and its your favourite. Also, its not so easy for your things in the bag to be taken too.

Tiger Airways charges $30 each way regardless of weight. What I normally do is put my shoes, golf balls etc in the travel bag and lock it.

Another reason why you would want to use a travel bag is the fact that the baggage handlers may accidentally open your golf bag cover (regardless of staff bag/ stand bag)... so while you are waiting eagerly at the luggage collection point, dun be surprise if your clubs comes out one by one instead of the whole bag! Razz

It almost happen to me once... my cover's zip was torn up Sad but luckily I have put some additional straps on and they manage to hold until I got the bag...

I saw a nice looking while titleist with scratches on the side after a trip to batam. I also felt the pain for the feller. Cant trust the bag handlers.

Yeah, thir 'magic' formula is:

they allow you up to 15kg on your golf bag. Anything more than that, you pay (and the per kg charge isn't insignificant). Then they take 26kg (your allowance on Slave class), minus off 15kg, and you have 11 kg left for your luggage. Anything weighing more, pay again.

Either that or they do not apply this consistently.

Hi,

I am looking for 3 travel bags or covers (thos which can allow me to put a lock) for the GR-organised Bintan game next week. Mainly to protect golf bags from stains and to prevent pilfering during bag handling.

As my friends and I don’t foresee ourselves travelling often for games, it will be great if any kind souls are willing to loan us for a nominal fee. I will self-collect, clean up and return to you after use.

Thanks much... Very Happy

sorry for butting in again.....

I'd suggest you to use a lesser known travel bag and don't use "Honma or Beres" brand.

A friend of ours who use Honma travel bag almost lost his golf set when someone "a colored Asian man" grab the golf travel bag, tore down the "important document" attached to the bag, and snatched it away, and claimed it to be his golf bag.

Good thing this incident was in Changi airport, someone saw it and told our friend. And the airport security personnel and our friend confronted the man who took the golf bag.

To end the story, our friend got backed his golf bag because he knew what was inside his bag...an old Dunlop golf club set.

Presumably, this colored man who stole the golf travel bag thought he could get away and steal a Honma Beres golf set...hehe

Not knowing whats the real stuff inside

Just checked with SQ. This is what they told me.

Baggage allowance is 20KG. Golf bag Max is 15 KG. You pay a standard 6kg excess weight. I specifically asked them this
ME - "If my lugage is 20kg and golf bag is 15 kgs, how much do i pay?"
reply was,

SINGAPORE AIRLINES - "sir, you only pay for 6kg Excess weight. Which for S'pore - HCMC is USD$8 p/kg."

Looks like there are some inconsistencies....

Carried my set to HK to play once and was also told that I exceed by 5 kg but they said they will waive it from Sing to HK. Asked me not to do it again.

I verified with thm that my colleague did that and everything they do not need to pay. SQ staff just said that it is not supposed to be that way. I guess so far they had keep an eye closed in practice.

One friend tried this : when weighing the golf bag he left it bottom of it hanging slighter over the weighing scale (ie protruding it out a bit) and that really shed few kgs off the actual one. In fact,it works for him .... like that also can...

I used to travel frequently on SQ.

Ive always been told that golf bags dont form part of your baggage weight. They weigh it, then they get an old uncle to take it away separate from the conveyor belt.
