was at the range today and we shared our concerns with the coach as he was around.

his explanation for not being around is that beginners might be too tensed and unable play naturally if the coach is there to look at every shot.

told him i noticed other coaches will stay with their students throughout, his explanation was that they are probably junior coaches hence they need to look at more shots to point out mistakes. he being very experienced would be able to point out what's wrong at one glance.

sounds like a certain clubfitter that i know. he can tell the size of your hand by just shaking it. "U wear glove size 24, right?"

Jeron,

Finish yr training and file an official compliant to SPGA and see if he has more to say. Let the SPGA deal with this type so call pro instructor.

USGtTF coaches are a disgrace to the profession. 2 days of training and they can be a coach. Save ya money people.

hi KK,

please refrain from posting such articles as the article looks like someone's rant rather than a 'factual' report.

It is unfair to many professionals who are trained by them. One black sheep does not mean that the school is bad.

Please substantiate your claims that the article is truthful and accurate(such as from a newspaper like the straits times). If it has no basis, the post and replies to them would be removed.

thank you

Fully agreed with Sunny that in any teaching federation, there bound to be a few bad eggs. Even SPGA teaching pro has it fair share of criticism. But that doesn't mean that the whole organization is lousy.

Believe the article should be from one of the US forum. The story never ends, the argument of who is better in teaching (PGA or USGTF) never ends. Both have its fair share of praise and criticism.

But only one thing is certain, if a teacher has a genuine interest in improving his/her student golfing skill, he/she must be a good teacher. Regardless of what school he/she comes from.

Yes. It's a matter on how professional and commited you are to improve your student, and interest generally for golf game or money only....

Hi kk, that does not substantiate. That is a blog which anyone can write and not a verified news source. Quoting someone's rant with no basis is irresponsible and unfair to those who are trained under usgtf.

Agreed. A true and passion commitment to improve the student game. But unfortunately, sometime one is so obsess with money that the student's interest take a back seat. These teachers are the real pain in the ass in the fraternity.

I dun think all are no good, or the standard is lower for USTGF certified coach... PAT requirement is not as tough as PGA but still need a certain ability.

there are also PGA certified coaches that cannot teach at all.

Its all about the person how he wants to impart the knowledge to his students

I dont believe that anyone with 2 days of training and shoot score of 82 should be able to teach golf as is usgtf. SPGA not much better. Pass pro test which is 2 rounds shoot under 75 and all of sudden can advertise as golf instructor and teach. These pros have no teaching experience or training in coaching. I think years of teaching and continued retraining to improve skills is needded to become a good coach. Good players do not always make good coaches. I can shoot under 82 and I would never dream of trying to teach someone to play golf. Just my 2 cents

Actually... I personally feels that regardless the score of the coach... a good coach is not = good player and a good player may not necessarily be a good coach.

Yeah, I agree wth you alvin7379; I don't ask my coach his score nor what tournaments he has played before. All I want is his ability to teach me how to play golf properly. My coach is super patient with me cos I damn slow learner and not the athletic type. He's also very dedicated and when people say I do well on the green I always give full credit to my coach; cos that's what it is.

Come to think about it, I better not throw tantrums at him anymore.....(oops, hope he don't read this ).

its not there own playing ability that concerns me but rather the lack of training and knowledge obtained in 2 days. Most would now how their own swing work but how to fix many other swing problems? Passion and dedication and commitment are good qualities of coach. Friendly person also good but i much prefer to give my $$ to a coach with knowledge, adequate training, proven results and experience. I don't want to be guinea pig for coach to try this and that and see how...

i hve to agree with Alvin. I wonder how leadbetter play. in other sports, this theory is true as well. was alex ferguson a spectacular player in his prime? but we do know tat he is alrdy a legendary coach nw.

Actually, most teaching pros offer trial lessons which allows you to determine if their teaching method suits you. Regardless of the number of days the teaching pro had for training (they would anyway probably had golfing & teaching experience prior to teaching officially), there are coaches that can teach well.

I personally feels that a good coach should be able to:
- observe your swing and identify area of improvements
- understand the ability of each student and teach them within their means instead of one size fits all approach
- have the ability to translate and relate to you his instructions
- friendly and approachable so their student will not hesitate to ask questions
- help you set targets to gauge your progress
- and of cos... be responsible of his commitment to the students as we ARE your customers! Razz

A teaching pro having attended a 1yr course need not necessarily be a good coach as compared to one with a 2 days cert.

If in doubt, you can always ask around in this forum for good teaching pros with good reviews... I'm sure there is plentiful here Smile
