PostSubject: Value for money - how to fill petrol   Wed Jul 15, 2009 3:15 pm

Hi Everyone ! I don't drive but would love a good tips to save some $$$ for another golf game, thanks bro Sing for sharing !

Enjoy ! Beer

Tips :

1. Only buy or fill up your car or bikkie in the early morning when the
ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the fuel, when it gets warmer petrol expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your liter is not exactly a liter. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the petrol, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role. A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

2. When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping... All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

3. One of the most important tips is to fill up when your tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Petrol evaporates faster than you can imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating roof.
This roof serves as zero clearance between the petrol and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.
Unlike service stations, every truck that they load is temperature compensated so that every liter is actually the exact amount.

4. Another reminder, if there is a fuel truck pumping into the storage
tanks when you stop to buy, DO NOT fill up--most likely the
petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and
you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.

how much can you save? i think pump on convenience is the best. Pass by a petrol kiosk? Just pump. If not you detour and pump sure contribute to more CO2 and waste money

I read this before - useful info even though, like Sunny, I'm not sure how much money we can save. Then again, times are hard... every little bit helps Smile Thanks!

Not saying it's factual or not........on the other hand I guess I am. I saw a segment on Mythbusters about these "facts" and another show discussed also. End result after some testing was that these are "urban" myths and not necessarily factual.

But, fun to read nonethelss.

How to pump when the gas jockies grab the hose before you even get out of the car in Singapore?

Anyways, I agree that there are probably ways to get your money's worth of petrol.

The bad thing is the 'global oil baron monopoly' will just raise the prices no matter what anyways.

They can always blame rising usage in China and Indian for the price hikes!

How about 'shaking the car'? ....But seriously, for those who had the chance to travel to JB, think many of us had seen the various stunts one pursue to pump more petrol to save money, then after that....ramp the engine 'vrroommm ...vroooommmmm''......( not sure if they realize that basically contra-off the additional petrol liao).......

But seriuosly, I seriously remember seen a documentary where over-filling the tank coz leakage and impact the air in the car and risk car getting ignite with fire....

So....commone sense prevails.....pls

Agree, please dont over-pump your car with petrol, if its full, its full, the a few more ml of petrol will not make your fuel needle raise higher, neither will it increase your milage. Instead it may cause an explosion if there is some static

also, remember to discharge your own inherent static electricity before touching the fuel pump

with regards to UL tips above, its worth a try, or at least i try the Pump in the morning tip, does make sense...

i heard of another myth/fact, maintain at most only half tank of petrol, so that the weight of car is lighter...thus less fuel consumption and more responsive pickup.

considering the hassle of going to the petrol kiosk more often and the harmful effects of breathing in those petroleum fumes, just to shed a mere weight of 30-50L (22-36kg) worth of petrol, I'm not too sure if its beneficial.

but i guess if combined with other weight cuts, dun put golf bag in car, lighter rims, passengers compulsary to go on a diet, it may help tho. Very Happy
