SSquirrel is correct. I reshafted one to try....felt good but not worth the cost to reshaft the whole set since MX-19 is cast iron and cant bend.

No point reshaft a set that doesnt have lies that suit you. better to buy the prototype which makes more economic sense.

My verdict is that I will continue to use this for another year and then perhaps I am good enuff then for a custom set.

I hope that bro snowman can learn from my mistake. I shld have bgt the MX-25 from the onset. keke

Hi Gray,

You should really consider having the irons fitted for your lie angles (I am guessing from your post you needed lie angle adjustments). With the wrong set up, and continued practice, you can only ingrain things you do not want in your swing. Practice only makes permanent Smile

We actually have irons bent 1 degree to 5 degrees flat so golfers can see what a 5 degree flat club can do.

MC, you are right. Most golfers can start off deciding if they want Game Improvement irons or Swing Improvement irons.

I personally started out golf with game improvement irons. While games are good, the ball striking was nothing fantastic. Worse part was that I got a whole bunch of bad habits developed. Switch to Swing Improvement iron and 4 months later, the balls striking was just beautiful. When hitting off grass during practise, the divots were just sweet. Smile

I don't see how a noob can get fitted if he is learning the game and isn't even sure how to address the ball properly.

Well, a golfers physical stats aren't going to change that much. Getting fitted makes learning the golf swing easier. That what most golfers don't realize. Imagine a guy that is 6 feet tall with short hands, standard clubs will feel awful and he would be bending over too much. Or someone that is 5 feet tall trying to play standard length clubs.

I am sure most of us have see golfers with very stretched out arms when addressing. They are simply trying to have the sole of the club sit flat on the ground. If they have a set with the right lie angle, then that stretching out won't be necessary (unless they are working on a Moe Norman swing Smile

Wah, just from reading the post you can guess lie adjustment is needed, looks like we've all been using the wrong equipment and going to the wrong clubfitter.

I use to play with 2 degrees flat. And still get the occasional hook. Most golfers who have decent ball striking will almost always tell you their bad shots go left (for the right handed golfer). It may not be your swing but rather the lie angle of the club.

Here's one experiment you can do for yourself. Get some blue tack and a pencil. Use the blue tack and attached the pencil (or any small stick) to the center of the club face. Use your pitching wedge. The pencil should be sticking out illustrating the trajectory the golf ball will take. If you change the lie angle by moving the grip up and down, you will see that the changes in direction is very drastic. A couple of degrees down essentially could put your 110 meter PW 20 meters to the left. On the long irons, they are less noticeable.

We have had guy who are about 5' 7" tall and we give them a club that is 4 degrees flat. They immediately took the left side out of play.

What if the swing changes from maybe a steep to flat swing.... the poor beginner will have to adjust lie again???

wow...i just came back from lunch and i saw this thread was flooded.

To yelnats, MC, Ssquirrel, shotah, watermyforrest, Jliang, Lamts18, S70B, Gray, nientsu and CCC (chinchiachun)....

thank you so much for all your advise and opinion.

No hard feeling, no fight calling to compare clubs...and all these comments are valuable reference for me.
I believe nothing is perfect in this world, custom fit definitely has it's own advantages over off-the-shelves clubs and i believe vice versa too, and so does fatty sole versus swing improvement clubs.

I have to confess one thing....few years back, i have a golf set which is what many peple call it as 'cheong set'..."make in china"...and over the past 3 years, i change off my driver to a real one (Maruman, stiff shaft), i remove my 'cheong' FW and replace it with utility clubs which i have bought from japan (Nike slightshot, steel shaft) and i have also replace my 'cheong' putter with TM putter, also bought from Japan. So what left for me is actually the iron set, which i hope i can have it replace as well.

I would definitely study everyone's comment and will seriously think about it before making a decision. No doubt, i will try to test out some clubs as well, hopfully i can do that in the range with you guys..hehe and will find a chance to talk to some club fitter.

i am also thinking should i replace my iron set, i guess i would not need #3 and #4 iron, and hopfully have the set start maybe from #5 or #6 iron to SW...

Hopfully i can make some sense here and not talking rubbish...haha

So are you saying that for a beginner golfer, his physical stats wun change as he improves?
I will disagree on your fitting solution then. Maybe not his weight and height but definitely in his posture and stance as he progresses.

So how do you fit someone who stands close to the ball initially when he first started then get to a more atheletic posture as he gets better in the game? The poor bugger will be confused whether its his clubs or him that needs work.

Someone who is 5'7" playing 4* flat irons? Has to be extra long arms. I know 5'7" golfers who are fine w 1* or 2* flat at most. Your comment can mislead other 5'7" ppl here who might contemplate bending their irons the same way.

Adjusting lie angle to 4* flat can also be an extreme to taking the left side out of play. Keppel's OB markers are mostly on the right.

You angle attack isn't going to change that much unless you make a conscious effort to do so. Chances are that with a right lie, you will develop a good swing and better accuracy on your irons. The lie angle adjustments is something that is done for a golfers that see a qualified club fitter. If the fitter tells you they do not do lie angles, then something is wrong.

Bending clubs does take some experience and confidence. Mine gets bent 6 degrees. So you can imagine how much the shaft moves during the process.

Whether you are a world class player (like Jyoti Randhawa who wanted us to adjust he's irons by 1/2 degree) or a social golfer, the right lie will help.

I meant physical states as in wrist to floor, hand size, height. Not so much to do with the way he addresses the ball. You are referring to a change in swing posture. Under those situations, you would then have your fitter re-check your lie requirements.

Not misleading anyone. I am siting examples. Everyone will have their on lie angle requirements. Ben Hogan is 5'7" and he irons are 6 degrees flat (plus, he has an erect posture).

That said, I am sure most are also aware that clubs have gotten more upright over the years (to help golfers combat the dreaded slice). So bending them 4 flat may be just 2 degrees flat when compared to the older clubs.

Google importance of lie angle on accuracy or lie angle effects. I am sure you will find a wealth of information available.

Thought I should add that as with anything in life, there is no constant other than change. I use to play 2 degrees flat and now am at 6 degrees flat. It works for me but may not be for others.

There is no hard an fast rules but if you are not those lucky few that can play with the lie angles from off the rack clubs, get fitted.

I know lie angles are important Stan. I adjust mine whenever they are off.

How flat or upright your angle need to be is not only dependant on your physical stat but how u address and contact the ball. Checking them if they are correct needs a repeatable swing to see if its consistently off, hence something a noob will struggle with.

Quoting Ben Hogan is like telling partial truth. Not everyone here knows how flat his swing plane is.

You have to bear in mind we have alot of noobs in this forum and not established or accomplished players like in golfwrx which you frequent. Your assumption that most people know that golf clubs are getting more upright over the years are questionable too. Telling people bending 4* flat is like 2* in yesteryear's equipment means F all to people here as most have not wielded those 19 kong kong equipment before.
