I know lie angles are important Stan. I adjust mine whenever they are off.

How flat or upright your angle need to be is not only dependant on your physical stat but how u address and contact the ball. Checking them if they are correct needs a repeatable swing to see if its consistently off, hence something a noob will struggle with.

Quoting Ben Hogan is like telling partial truth. Not everyone here knows how flat his swing plane is.

You have to bear in mind we have alot of noobs in this forum and not established or accomplished players like in golfwrx which you frequent. Your assumption that most people know that golf clubs are getting more upright over the years are questionable too. Telling people bending 4* flat is like 2* in yesteryear's equipment means F all to people here as most have not wielded those 19 kong kong equipment before.

S70B...there is definitely more to what I have said. I am just quoting examples. Definitely in no way saying anyone who is 5' 7" should be playing 6 degrees flat.

Please do not misunderstand that I am quoting half truths and making questionable statements to mislead others. These are merely my opinions and thus, I advise them seeing a fitter.

I wonder how anyone will fit Jim Furyk with his standard height and stature but he stands so close to the ball. 3-4* flat too?

S70B...perhaps you misunderstood me. As I have said, everyone is different but should have their lie angles checked by their fitter to suit their swing. All I am saying is that they should not be playing off the rack clubs. Hope I cleared things up.

Got that. From your postings, it seems like you were advising everyone to go flat and you kept harping on your '2* to 6*' flat lie change after a long while which was also unusual since you are the boss of Torquegolf and should have ready access to club adjustments whenever you needed it.

Good that you understood me. It was not meant to be such and apologies if it came across as such.

In any case, since this is forum, exchange of opinions is always healthy.

Hi yelnats

yes, i totally agree, that we should take opinion with an open mind and there is always no harm exchanging point of views.

I really learn alot thru this thread, and thank you so much.

Also thanks to S70B and the rest who had contributed their opinion.

my first set: katana forged with graphite
my second set: golfsmith proforged with DGLite
my third set: Precept TP with TX Tour
my fourth set: Tourstage Z101 with TX Tour
my fifth set: Nakashima with DGSL
My sixth set: Prototype with TX Tour

now i kept both the Z101 n the Prototype, never been happier

point is: u will go through a few sets as u progress as a golfer, u will buy new clubs as your swing evolve, u will buy cos we know u like to try new things, u will be fooling yourselves if u think that the first set u buy will last to your grave, its like telling your gf/wife/mistress that the first LV bag she buy will be her last........ no freaking way, trust me on this, and deep down we are just like them........ but its not a bad thing, cos if it makes u happy, do it

i know u like to be cautious on your first purchase, just buy a friendly set, 1st hand/2nd hand dun matter, u must like it, after u have become a golfer, then u start looking at loft/lie/weight etc etc etc........ its a journey, u make good choices and bad choices, but u will learn n be better, we would luv to help u, sometimes u have to open the door yourself

I can't agree more. What S07B mentioned is not wrong either. Sometimes when we are sitting behind a computer, things may not come out right since we do not have person to person contact. As such, it may have come across wrongly.

Since S70B is also a moderator here, I am sure he's comments were meant to be part of a healthy discussion.

Sometimes I put too much info on my posts (and try to keep things brief) and if there is anything that is unclear, please feel free to ask. Definitely not ignoring the newbies.

Smile one way you can experiment is to give friend's clubs a try a see which you like. And if you have an old forged iron, have a fitter bent it to your recommended lie angle and hit some shots with it. From there, you can make some adjustments. At least you would be able to judge if the lie angle helps.

Some have long arms, some have short, some stand upright, some have flat swings, or stand closer to the ball, whatever swing style, length and lie adjustments will help you hit more accurate shots.

Slinger, I think your reply is by far the best reply in the entire thread.

Snowman:
I started out with a used set of irons and a putter. And currently, all my clubs are 2nd hand except for a 56 degree that I got for a birthday present. Your first set will not be your only set, unless you stop playing the game and let it collect dust in the storeroom. I'm playing a Callaway X-20 with steel shafts. I chose steel shafts ONLY because coach told me to hit steel instead of graphite. That was my ONLY criteria. (My putter was another story, though.)

I think the more important issue here is to enjoy the game while improving your game. Ben Hogan once said "the greatest pleasure is obtained by improving." We are always looking to better our swing, make it more efficient, more reliable, more repeatable. The emphasis is always YOU.

Seriously, unless you can feel and understand the difference between swing weight, lie, flex and other technical terms, why bother paying extra for them? I understand that there are many club fitters in this forum and I am not here to criticize their expertise. They speak from their wealth of experience and they have the knowledge to begin with. However, I speak as a golfer to another golfer, "Get a decent set that you can afford and start playing. That's where the fun begins."

Oh, and Gray:
Exactly what's wrong with your clubs? How far are you hitting them? May I know why do you say that it's a lie problem?

Btw, a particular club fitter told me that Cast Iron clubs like mine are unsuitable to adjust lies. I was also curious to find out the effects of lie adjustment, only to find that my clubs were unsuitable for that. As far as I know, Forged Clubs are suitable for lie adjustment.

Ok... getting ready for the bombardment from all the expert clubfitters... Razz

No bombardments Smile Everyone here started golf knowing nothing Smile

It depends on which cast iron. Some cast irons have short hosels (e.g. Callaway), so it would be possible to bend them.

Cast irons can be bent to some extent. May be 1 to 2 degrees. Again, it also depends on what materials are used to make them (e.g. titanium clubs are not bendable).

So I won;t say they cannot be bent. Forged irons can be bend to a larger degree. If you need more than 3 degrees adjustments, then forged would be a better alternative.

Snowman, there is a used set posted in marketplace. I think it is pretty reasonable set to start with.

Stock shaft choices are usually between steel and graphite. Determine if you would like heavier and more stable steel shafts or softer and lighter graphite ones. Your coach, if you have one, will be able to advise. The worst thing to do is to listen to sales people because they will definitely push for the more expensive graphite shafts.

I can name a couple but you have to go see for yourself which one is good for you. I have personally tried them so I know they are alright.
Callaway X-20
Cobra S9
Maruman Conductor
TaylorMade CGB Max
Nike Slingshot

Something worth mentioning are the Mizuno MX200 and MX25. They are also pretty good if you are looking for something to take you all the way to single handicap. A tad harder to hit but very good feel.
