dun think things work that way... after a while the amount you put into the set will not seem as much as when you buy them.

And if in the first place, you can afford give up the money on an expensive set, you can definitely afford to give up the set after that.

I think you should try and find a second hand mizuno mp 57... It is forged and is relAtively forgiving while giving good feedback... I think u can prob get it for 400-500... I know coz I sold mine at that price last year... Give it a try, u wun regret it...

i bought a super game improver (Big Bertha 08) but surprisingly found it harder to hit than a 6 iron Callaway X-tour (game improver) bought for $19. The Callaway FT also feels better and easier to hit. Maybe super game improvement irons may not be for me. So SGI may not equal easier to hit.

Also find it easier to hit a Nike SV tour wedge (52, 60) vs the BB 08 SW (55).

Maybe because i am less of a swinger but then again my swing is all wrong Embarassed

MP-57: Fantastic club, fabulous feel, but I personally feel that it is difficult to hit. To be honest, it took me almost 9 months into the game before I could hit a MP series. I could hit them, but I will need sufficient practice before going to the greens with them.

$400 for a set of MP57 is a fantastic deal. I'm assuming 4-PW. I would be tempted too!

Actually, i find mp57 a good combination of forgiveness + feel + feedback. In fact, MP57 is my first set of irons. My thought at that point of time is that if you are serious about golf, you should buy a set of irons that is truthful to you and last you a reasonable amount of time.

IMO, buying those super forgiving irons is quite a waste of time because it takes away the emphasis on ball striking. I feel that as long as anyone is willing to put in a reasonable amount of time to practise, cavity back irons like MP57, Ikasu CB and the prototype is not too difficult to handle and should be the way to go. Of coz, if you are only thinking about going to the range once a week or biweekly and are not able to put in that much of an effort due to other commitments, then my advise is that you should pick up those super forgiving irons so that you enjoy the game.

Conclusion, you have to ask youself what do you want from golf, how far you want to go and how much effort you want to put in. Nevertheless, rem that there is no right or wrong. So long as you arrive at you destination eventually, it doesnt matter whether you take route a, b or c (ie, i know a 15 handicapper who started golf with a blade).

Well Siaw8, I guess its all a matter of personal opinion.

I always give Mowen grief for his G10 clubs and his belly putter. Then again, since you are using Ikasus, do you shoot in the high 70s and low 80s like him? He doesn't range. Oni plays 3 times a week. I don't see him changing his style of clubs anytime soon.

End of the day, the score card doesn't have a column to state what clubs did you use to post that score.

Everyone here always say ask yourself if you wanna improve or something like that. But, for most that I see, almost 90% of the ppl end up disheartened very easily when they get bling bling clubs and struggle with them. If everyone is trying to find that magical forgiving driver to hit further and more fairways, why find irons that you cannot handle if you know you are not eldrick-ish talented? Do yourself a favour, swallow that ego and soon, your scores will be dropping.

Are your irons 6* flat and do you have an erect posture? If not, you are not the real thing. ROFL

The wise one has spoken.. Surprised
I'm going golf shopping to buy more forgiving irons!!!

Actually I agree with S70B. I used to play somewhat decent golf last time when I built myself a set of big bertha iron clones on graphites.
I only wished they built in less offset in the "game improvement" irons.

Then again, I think the 'golf equipment' part of this silly game is part of the enjoyment and "journey" as a golfer.
One starts off hacking around, gets better, decides that his golf scores will improve with better equipment, "upgrades" equipment. Some will even chase to procure "tour only" equipment. All this is part of the fun and craziness of the game. Just remember the pros and good amateurs all have a lot of talent and put in a lot of HARD WORK! silent

I totally agree with S70B, while some beginners are going for MB or even balde sets(i personally know a few), some of the pros i know are changing from blades to cavity backs. One of the reasons is that they would want to hit the balls much eaasier. Its like we are always looking for the drivers to split the fairways, but irons, we just did not mention. Alot of people is asking me, why aren't i using steel shafts. Simply because I want to use less effort hitting the balls and getting consistence direction all the time. Why I keep improving our swing so that we get consistent and at the same time custom fitting our golf set is to concentrate on managing the course rather than thinking whether I will hit the ball sweet or not.

My profile:
I don go range. My back stiffen up after game and needs 2 days of rest. My swing speed is slow. I am not Tiger nor Jaidee...I am just the average Joe who happen to be crazy madly in love with this game. Some folks seen my swing and still trying to convince me to give up golf and try mastering mahjong instead

I am your Ave Joe....and I use the Max Game Improvement Irons....my recipe for good score is luck

Mr Lam, i forgot to tell you something, if there is nothing wrong with your set at any moment, please dun change it. But seriously, i really admire DGman. I remember the first time my brother brought to his shop. I wanted to buy the Ikasus but he told me that I am not ready yet. So that sort of give me my first set of goals of making him sell me the clubs, but in my heart, i was like " wah lan eh, Knn, i want to spend money but he dun want to sell me. Is this guy doing this for a living...." Smile

my 2 cents worth...

when one quote the ben hogan era, they must remember that the 5 irons in those days is about the standard 7 iron today. loft has strengthen over the years and lengthening of club length makes objective comparison difficult.

i don't know if they had precise measurements in that era so whether BH iron X degrees flat or upright is probably not well documented. whether its flat or upright depends on the manufacturers specs. some will list 6 iron as 60.5 and others at 62, so there is really no standard specifications when it comes to lie and loft, its the manufacturer call.

lastly...what's right for one....go to a driving range with a few friends, try their irons and find out what fits your swing. then ask them for their buying price and you have established what you don't like.

since you are using bag/wife analogy, how about our wives? can we change them too, assuming its not a bad thing and if it makes one happy? Razz

NB, kenna suan again.......however changing wivies is not a good analogy based on 2 parameters

1) changing bags/clubs is one dimensional, we change them, they dun change us, wives bit different, sometimes before we changed them, we might kenna changed by them, lidtat how to make us happy

2) after we change them, there is this little problem of maintenance, usually 50% of what we owned, again dun make us happy

clubs and bags dun do the above leh............ flower

from my observations, GI sets usually comes with SW. Guess they dun expect ppl using GI set to go into so many details of a wedge...
