PostSubject: Any tip for hitting the 20 foot flop over a bunker ?   Wed Feb 17, 2010 7:01 pm

Dear all,
I often am faced with a 20 foot shot over a bunker to a near pin and my usual chip will not work. However, I am afraid of the flop shot which is probably the correct one to hit here. Other than slightly opening my stance and keeping clubface open, do you guys have any tips for the kind of swing I should make ? Is it the normal chipping swing and is it a full or half swing ? Thanks !

flops are hard to pull off.

the only tip i have for you is to be committed to your shot. no fear. address it and go for it.

Hi there,

Can i share my humble experience. i used to fear such shots. But now, 9 out of 10 times i can execute and land the ball where i wanted.

Wedge
u need to have a good wedge that suit your swing and your contact. i would recommend tour wedges as the edges are more rounded and will help you cut thru the lie, whatever the lie is. Vokeys 62 or 64 is great. best i have ever used. else mizuno t10s are great too. I feel the TM z grooves are hard to execute this kind of shots. Now i am using Nike TW 60deg.. work like magic..

Swing
Keep your hands light and soft and do not rotate your hips. use your shoulders to swing thru but not make a full turn. Impt : hands must be soft and relazed. no need for full back swing.. depending on distance. Stance wide and ball near to left feet. club edge facing target

Commit
commit to your shot and dun hesitate

Practice
No need to say. Please practice at least 500 balls on range, Work magic. No wedge can save you if u dun practice. AT LEAST 500 Balls....

This is my humble experience and i am not a coach. i learnt this from my own coach, a good buddy and lots of practice!!

Hope it works for you..

Cheers

Andrew

keys to a flop shot
1.weak right hand grip(it doesnt help if your left hand grip is strong so it should be fairly neutral)
2. stand closer( this promotes a steeper swing)
3. Set up slightly open with club pointing at target( a steeper angle of attack would be encouraged)
4. hinge earlier than usual( this reduces swing radius. smaller swing radius, easier to control for a shorter shot)
5. Keep your wrist shape the same as at address through to impact(rotating the wrists would cause the clubface to shut down and impact)
6. Maintain your posture through to impact( the more moving parts, the more complex the swing becomes)

however to pull these off you'd need to understand when a flop shot can be executed, when it is needed, why it is needed and the risk of it when used before applying how it should be executed.

ultimately it's all just tips and andrew has pointed out some pretty gd ones.its easy to say here but what we don't know is what you do and what you think you should be doing. only way to get it right is to see what you are doing and adjust from there. but do try and let us know!gd luck

Dun forget that your lie is very impt. No point trying to hit a flop when your ball is sitting down in the rough, in a damp muddy lie or in a sandy scrabby spot. The avg player just dun have enuff skill to pick it clean or try to play it as an intentional 'fat' shot.

Sometimes, its just better to take your medicine, focus on clean contact and landing the ball to the safe part of the green. It might even mean playing away from the hole.

i learnt that it is all about the loft and shaft angle at impact. Same as bunker shot technique except ball first not sand. The lie very important as is the practice and confidence to execute.
