guys, i recently watched and discovered in golf channel that using a x-stiff shaft for driver can actually lower the flight profile with lower launch angle. pls give your comments, esp those using x-stiff shafts for drivers.

i'm using Diamana X-Stiff shaft on my Nike Dymo2 10.5 loft...launch is still pretty high.

Instances of low flight will be when i tee up lower and address at least 2 balls away from my heel.

Just my exp using X-stiff shaft.

Hi

my understand is as below :

swing speed of 120 or 125mph and above can use x-stiff shaft

ball flight is a funtion of below :

1. Shaft kick point
2. Loft angle
3. Swing path
4. Location of CG within the club head

there could be more

I doubt i can hit 120mph swing speed Laughing
But it's my preference over a regular or stiff flex, just don't like the whippy feel.

I think so too.....look at the baseball game, most of the ball (except for those homerun) are very low flight... cheers

Think it also depends on the kick-point for the shaft too. If you want lower ball flight, why don you just change to a driver head with lower loft??

It's not the shaft flex that changes the flight profile, it's the kickpoint. Get something with a high kickpoint if you want a lower flight profile

maybe it is your swing?
impact position?
flipping?
hanging back?

i think a launch monitor AND a pro looking at your swing on video would give u a better answer.

Well it's best to see the figures on a launch monitor for an expert clubfitter to prescribe the shaft and driver required together a professional golfer's opinion. Some think that their ball flight is no ideal due to various reasons. These 2 solutions would solve the doubts one might have over their ball flight.

Haha... Justin... in fact I did... went BFG to get my driver fitted. I thought I will learn more about my swing stats... but looking at the screen... I get more confused by all the numbers!!! keke..

End up just leave it to Eric to make the choice for me... geek

scientifically and realistically there are huge differences in choosing a shaft...why? i will cover that in another subject - the myths of golf shafts.

however, there are 5 basic considerations that we use in helping golfers in choose the appropriate shaft.

1. the stiffness of the shaft (LL, L, A, R, S, XS and XXS) - the key considerations here are club head speed and tempo.

2. Weight of the shaft - the key consideration here is desired feel, swing tempo and physical condition of the golfer.

3. Kick point - i just want to elaborate a little, assuming you can make a shaft that's butt stiff, tip soft or butt soft, tip stiff or butt stiff and tip stiff, which ones are low, mid or high kick (one you understand this physic, you will understand how the kick point comes to elevate or lower your drives - key considerations are the golfer swing characteristic (launch angle, dynamic loft, spin rate, maximum height, land angle. to make this work the analysis starts from the golfers swing as well as his driver of choice. its a little bit more than finding the right shaft, most of the time it starts from the choice of driver head, loft and dynamic loft (face angle combined with effective loft).

4. The feel of the shaft - this can be contributed to torque, kick point and stiffness of a shaft. although it is technically not an issue with swing robots, it is an important point for sensitive golfers who rely on "feel" to unleashed their power. Combining the right head and the shaft with the right torque and stiffness will also result in greater accuracy.

5. Budget - depending on the budget, one can find different shafts to suit different golfers. the more expensive shafts tends to promote better feel or control due to the manufacturing process and the more intricate means of built (the type, tonnage of prepeg and percentage of resin versus graphite or high modulus carbon content). the use of higher tonnage prepeg can also result in a shaft that can lower torque while not increasing weight substantially.

other consideration for golfers include colour and nos (feng shui driven), brag factor, name (like buay sala), etc

hope you will find this useful.
