Why not ? As long as it covers the distance you need, wood is not important.

I'm not a wood player too. I rely on my hybrids to cover 165-180 m range...

Generally, the wood still hits longer than a hybrid.
However, the advantage of the hybrid is that you get the ball up easily and higher even in the rough which sometimes a wood or iron cant do.
Would definitely recommend you to hit a hybrid instead of woods if you find it difficult hitting a wood off the deck.

The question reminds me of the movie "tin cup". He broke every single club in his bag and played the rest of the 4 holes with only the 7 iron. He even putted with the 7.
The short answer to this question is yes you can replace the wood with hybrid not just the long irons.

You are not alone bro. I can't hit wood too. Gave up after trying for months.
Doing fine with my hybrid 2 & 4 I to cover 160-180 m. Razz

I carry a 4W but it's more for show really. I rarely use it. I get by just fine with my 2 hybrids, i.e. 3H and 4H which work wonders for me.

I also had the same consideration.. as I only have a 3H 19 deg Rescue. Bought a Ping G15 3wood but quite tough to hit. Probably good for 180m for my 3 wood but i dont get it so far that often Sad

I replaced a 5 wood with a 3 hybrid. That was at a time when I hit woods very badly and hybrids really well.

Then I regretted cos out of the blue, my 3 wood shots are perfect but my hybrids like KNS.

Now I really want back my 5 woods but cant find the same model already. Crying or Very sad

This was also a recently solved mystery for me. I tee off fine with a wood but when I tried the same with the hybrid, the ball just didn't take off.

Then I trawled the internet for the answer and found that you are supposed to swing the hybrid like a long iron.

I am only using a hybrid as it is a replacement for my 3Iron.
My hybrid is 21 degrees. My driver gives me about 250-260m on the avg and my 3wood is about 225-240 on the avg. However my Hybrid only covers 190-210, therefore I have a gap from 210-225 which does not really matter at all as I rarely need to hit those distances.

I have more wedges instead to cover the shorter distances. It is true that it is more of a personal preference. Ultimately, if you are relatively long enough, you do not need to hit any longer rather you should be aiming for more accuracy.

I am newbie too. Should I swing the 3W like a iron or closer to a driver?

I used to carry a 3wd but was not consistent with it. Replaced it with a 1i and voila, most confident club in the bag for tight fairways and long approaches. To me, the hybrid is much easier to hit due to its shorter shaft and deeper CG which promotes higher launch. I like the hybrids so much that I carry 3 in my bag.

On a even fairway(good lie), i prefer to use 4 or 5 wood than hybrid.
I don't have a 3 wood.

I love my 5 wood, but i cant seem to hit my 3wood. My fren who is a 3 hcper said that the trick of using the 3 wood is not to muscle it. But no matter how gentle i am with it, I still duff it. I find that the shaft of most 3woods are very whippy, I feel the shaft bending as i start my downswing, but i can never utilise that lag. Instead of hitting the ball, i hit the ground.

Hybrids to me are useful for getting out of the rough or hitting to uneven or very bad lies. Try hitting a wood on a bad lie, that takes a lot of skill and confidence man!! And bc you hit the hybrid like an iron, you can use it to punch balls out of the rough, or simply hit a 100m low 'rolling' safety shot to the green. Not very beautiful to see, but it quite a useful shot.

I have exactly the same problem as you. Always duff using 3wood.
On the bright side, it also good not to have 3 wood in the bag....at least i won't turn offensive and keep on chiong.

i prefer hybrids to fairway woods myself. i feel woods serve two functions in general; backup for my driver and hitting shots off the grass that travel far. personally i hardly tee off with anything other than my driver and my 3h covers most if not all of the longer approach shots into the green. so i only carry a 3w just in case my driver is behaving badly. i never hit it off the grass cos i just don't have the swing speed to launch it. so a hybrid is my go to club for shots off the turf.

wah i'm rambling dunno what i just typed. haha anyway i just bought myself an adams a7 4H. can't wait to bring it out and try! Very Happy

But i know you have a Ping 4 wood inside your Bag..... What a Face

For me my 5 wood distance is "almost" the same as my 3 wood so no point carry a 3 wood.... Embarassed

I now hit my wood better than my hybrid but it was the other way round few months ago..... Dunno WHY? Evil or Very Mad
