Would like to hear each an everyone's practise routine at the range.
Maybe we can learn and pick something up to improve our game.
If you do not mind, please state your handicap too.

Get to the range, look to the left, look to the right, find an empty spot behind a cute girl and swing away

I often read Golf Pros and teachers advising to start with our wedges up to Driver

But I kinda changed it.

Been analyzing this.

98% of the First Shot from the course entails using a driver or a 3wood.

So after i do some warm up stretches, I start from my driver.

Hit 3 to 5 shots, and then i go down to my wedges up to my irons
From irons to my Fw then to my driver.

I then finished it off with wedge.

Warming up and stretching b4 hitting any balls is a must for everyone. When I got my first set of irons, I immediately rushed to the range to try them out w/o any stretching and after the first 10 - 15 swings I pulled my back muscle which prevented me from touching my clubs for more than a month. The cost of visiting the doctor and TCM can easily get me another set of 2nd hand irons.

My first 100 balls would be focused on short game, specifically aimed at 30m, 50m, 75m, and 100m targets respectively (25 balls each).

The next 100 wld be on any 1 or 2 club(s). I don't believe in switching clubs every 5 - 10 balls as it doesn't promote any form of consistency. IMHO, it is important to get to know each club individually as each one gives you a different result. Having said that, I will usually fall to the temptation of whacking the driver every now and then.

I will usually end the session with some chipping or putting.

I completely agree with the need to loosen up the muscles before starting practice, whether it is by pitching shots inside 100m (which I personally feel is a great way to ingrain tempo and timing) or by grabbing 2 clubs and swinging.

As for the practice session, I have basically 2 types of practice sessions.

The first type is where I am trying to work on a new club or something in the swing that was not working properly on the course. In this case, I use the club(s) I want to work on for quite a number of balls, taking occasional breaks with my PW or AW (something easy to hit to boost confidence and remember good timing).

The second type was taught by my coach when I asked him why my range game seems decent but my actual game not. Aside from the explanations about forgiveness of the range mats and the perfectly level lies, he told me to play my favorite course at the range.

Basically, get a score card of any course (preferably one you are familiar with), then imagine you are on the tee box of the first tee. Play your first shot, estimate where it lands, then using the distance on the score card, play the 2nd shot ... and so on. No mulligans, no retakes, if you duff a shot, move on to the recovery shot.

According to my coach, benefits of this method include teaching you to deal with the fact that you seldom swing the same club twice on the green, and the no mulligans teaches you to deal with the pressure you will face on the actual green. For even better simulation, play with a friend and make small wagers (I recommend having a 3rd party as a referee though).

Also, for even better effect, don't always aim for targets directly infront of you, and this will help develop the ability for good alignment.

I guess the 2 methods have to work in tandem, because unless you have a relatively decent chance of striking the ball properly, target based practice is pretty frustrating. However, it can be a good way to inject some variety into the practice session.

I will always warm up before my practise. Normally starts with stretching for about 5-10 mins, then I will start by hitting my wedges first. Covering mostly on 50m-110m shots, that would have taken up about 100 balls. Next I will move up to my 8-7Irons for the next 100 balls, mostly working on my drills and shaping shots/visualization. I rarely touch my driver (probably 5-10 shots). Some days, I only work specifically on my long irons.

I always have a target to hit at, a precise target. Will always work on my pre-shot routine, this is important as you got to make it a habit to have a pre-shot routine for every shot you make on the golf course.

I like Derek's practice routine... very practical and goal oriented (with the course visualization). Perhaps if 2 days of range a week, one of the days shld be done like this.

For me, I like to start with warm up with 7I (stretch and stuff) so it'll be the first club I hit with - both for convenience and for morale (favorite club in the bag).

Then I'll move down to 9I then up to 5I then wedge then hybrid. This is to ensure I don't get the habit of having a gradual change in clubs (which might make things easier - prefer to be able to switch mode from short iron to long, to assimilate actual game.

Then will hit a few woods and driver shots before moving to the "focus" of the day (i.e. the club that screw up the last game)

Finally end with short game <80m

P.S. On stressed out days or moody - will mainly bomb driver shots to relieve stress.. heh Smile

how NOT to practice..A beginners way

warm up 20-30 balls with wedge or irons, then Driver all the way.....for 80-100 balls (in between some long irons, 3 wood, hybrid)

why driver? Its my weakest point,
- 5 drives OB (sometimes 10 OB), costing me 10 shots
- 5-10 poor placement, costing me 5-10 shots

so its an average of 15-20 shots lost minimum.

can do the normal and better way by starting teeing off with hybrid or 3 wood and go for placement......but at this point if i do that, golf will be boring.

practice iron at range mat is counter productive (especially for SGI irons), wood also the same, hybrid OK but still not the same. only the Driver at the range is as close as it can be on the course.

No wonder i never improve....plus i loss a lot of balls.....but having so much fun doing it.

How NOT to progress
- planning to get a forged CB iron before breaking 100
- switching from mallet to blade putter
- playing with new balls

If I ever go, I only bring my PW and my 51deg wedge....coz for both , I think I have the most good shots in relative to my other clubs

The one club I don practise is driver .....coz good shots are very berry few...henceforth don want to waste it at range.

aiyoh..just realized I did not reply thoroughly....

since I only buy 50balls in SG , 25 balls will be allocated to PW and 25 to 51deg.

For PW, hit with different ball flight...and then finish off with 5 balls with full swing.

For 51 deg, same...hit with different ball flight..and then finish with 5balls....emulating chip and run..

After 50balls....very berry tired liao.....

Great tip...brudder!!! This could just be the reason why my tee off is short.

While hitting hard....and Look Up, it should enable my neck muscle and left shoulder to move to my left, thus enabling no restriction while I swing hard coming down ......I reckon , if need to hit further, one should look up first...

will try it out next game....

OCC, MBGC & TPY have girls practicing.

Any woman swinging a golf club well is a wonder to behold. But watching a pretty woman swinging a golf club even badly is still good, IMHO.

I hit about 300 range balls three times a week using ALL the clubs except the putter, and I practice at putting & chipping greens about twice a week.

It's more for excersise and de-stressing than improvement of scores. (My SGA handicap is 26.)

Today, I saw a guy buy $100 worth of range balls at OCC!

That would last me only about a week's worth of practice sessions.

Shocked

haha, but watching a pretty woman hitting consistently better than you definitely makes you demoralised?

Last time I used to hit about 250 balls during each session when i first started out using my friend's graphite clubs.
But after I got my own set of steel shafts, not sure if its the passion dying off or work stress, but hitting 150 balls seemed more tiring than hitting 250-300 balls in the past.

So nowadays I only do about 100 balls, starting with 8 iron, 6 iron, 5 wood, and then driver.

Newbie here not even on the course yet. But been watching vidz and one of the advice given was to hit variations of clubs as if you are hitting a full game. But warm up better start from shorter clubs to drivers first. After which you can vary as much as possible in between clubs. The rationale was to get your body conditioned and not conditioned to just one or 2 clubs which you tends to hit more. Just sharing what i saw on golf fitness shows.

As you can see by now, I like to talk "nonsense" since I am no golf expert.
But better write something to the thread first before "attacking" the replies! hehee Smile

For me, I don't do warm-up <<< which explains my injuries I guess?
Buy 50 balls (first)
Find a spot far far away from any MEN. tongue
Try to recall what coach taught.
And just whack.

On and off, I will talk to myself. Sometimes, laugh at myself.
Other times, jump on the spot when I missed the ball. bounce

That's ME!! pig
