If you hit the ball longer does it mean that you are able to put the ball on the green?
Put it closer? Lower your score? Play more consistently? Length is definitely not a game changing factor Smile

Length is overrated to a certain extend. But believe me if you do not have a decent length you can never play good golf.

If you drive 200M on a 360M par 4, your next shot will be a 160M - 4iron. Certainly this will be a tough shot to put near the pin as compare to a 250m drive with a pitch wedge approached shot.

To put things into prospective, you need 230-260M with 75% accuracy to play good consistent golf.

I know what I am talking about, because I am the victim of a short and frustrating hitter!
ok, I am going to the gym leow......

master, im witness to your 1-chip-1-putts, so hitting it short is definitely not a problem for you.

if ur hitting 250m drives, then we're tokin abt birdie chance at almost every hole. Shocked

Call me master caddy .......maybe can.
If I can drive like your distant, I can make the ball dance on the green.
You always need birdies to cover your other mistakes, that the name of the game.

so which is better?

90m from the rough/side of the fairway or 120m from the middle of the fairway....plus I think we dont as many of those deep roughs where only 1/4 of the ball is visible or its all clay, wood chips and rocks (in fact it can be easier to hit off the rough at MBGC and the actual fairway).

I guess length is needed for those are hitting it not long enough to play a decent game.
In my opinion, length wise is a factor but definitely not a major factor.
It also being able to accept the disadvantages one have and maximise one's strength to their advantage.

I have a friend that hits it longer than me but he has ZERO short game Smile[/quote]

Ah.....we are talking different league.
Social golfer length is important.
For national standard than is a different ball game leow....
the one with steady balls bounce will win.

tronos, i don't think "90m from the rough/side of the fairway or 120m from the middle of the fairway" is a problem...i'll take either with no problem....the real question is 160m or 180m from the middle of the fairway...

it's hard to believe that there are golfers out there who are willing to put so much pressure on their chipping....i think i'm pretty damn good at chipping where i'm able to get up and down at least half the time from around the green but given a 400m par 4, and i'm left with 190m forcing me to hit my 7 wood flush....the margin for error is incredible and being 'kan cheong', i try to swing harder which results in either a bit of a slice (i.e. bunker or due to lost distance, about 30m from the green) or worse, a duff leaving me a pitch shot into the green....what are the odds of getting up and down in these situations?

worse still, the best score you can reasonably expect to make is par (discounting the occasional miracle chip in or hole out)......

every sub-80 score i've posted was a result of being able to have easy pars, be it GIR or my approach being on the fringe...where i've had to scramble from the sand, or from 30-50m, i've struggled to shoot low 80's....

50% up and down from the fringe v. 5-10% from bunker or pitching from 30-50m from fairway....u do the math......

thanks bro.....I can now sing ' I will never walk alone'...hahah

actually might worth considering so as to boost other's ego where for every 5 m which they outdrive me, they give me 1 stroke...

bros, i suppressed the ego and went to custom golf at bishan (just returned) and bot the ping G15 driver 10.5 degrees of loft, regular flex, TFC300D shaft, 45.75" in length....consistently giving me 15-20m extra and the dispersion was very tight....now i can thread the dreaded bunkers at marina and the tight fairways on keppel as i will now know exactly where the ball is headed......

also tried hitting the ping S57, G15 and rapture irons (7 iron only)....S57 made no difference due to the heavy shaft which is similar to the dynamic golds on my callaway x-tours....G15 was 10m longer and the rapture was 20m longer....incredibly tempting..but have to put it on hold given that i already splurged on the diablo 3 wood about a month back and now the G15 driver.....

i highly recommend going for custom fitting be it at custom golf at bishan or anywhere there is a launch monitor etc...for example, i felt that i was hitting my x-tours well but the computer showed differently......

can't wait for my next round..!!!!!!! woooooohoooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!1

i don't buy into the golf digest, etc propaganda about your putter being the most important club in the bag...logic dictates that even if you hit a bad putt, at most it will add one more stroke per hole to your score...but if you hit a bad drive, there's no limit to the number of strokes you can add....e.g. ob, pot bunker in marina, par 4's that you can't reach in 2, etc

plus if you have a longer drive, you have a shorter iron into the green increasing the chances of you 1 or 2 putting the green....i think that the only way i can drop my h'cap from where it is these days (hovering around 12) to single digit is really having a shorter club on my approach.....

in fact if you want to talk about statistics, the chances of getting up and down in 2 from off the green is definitely much lower than 2 putting from on the green.....anyway, i already can hit 80-90% of all fairways which is a benefit of being a short and straight driver....problem comes when trying to do too much with a long iron in my hands (anything above a 7 iron and it's iffy for me...)

and hey, if nakshima can take me there, i'm willing to live with the shame....!!!!

question is, can i still hit it straight while reaching 230-240m? bottom line is that ego always wins (otherwise, i'd be bleeding once a month) and i plan on going down to custom golf to get that extra 20m (that's 2 club lengths for me).....

In my opinion, putter is still most important. Imagine you play without one... plus you use it most frequently in one round...
But I think you mean expensive putter...

Just saw a match play between Jiyai Shin and Michelle Wie... I was reminded of this thread..

Michelle Wie outdrives her almost all the holes with significant distance... But Jiyai still won..
Jiyai 7 wood is more accurate than Wie 7 iron... She always lands her ball on better parts of the green...

True dat Smile
Shin has the advantage of giving Wie pressure if she is able to hit the ball close to the pin.

i think it's a valid argument assuming you can hit your 7 wood or your longer irons well...if not, give me that 7 iron any day of the week.......
