totally agree that its possible.

my view, there are 2 kinds of practise....#1 practising what one is already good and #2 practising what one is bad in...

If one practise how to make the bad shots slightly better, then its ok. ie not too much.

Was thinking if that and also physically in the right state to practice. Though I do not hit too many balls nowadays but too regular sessions seems to be taking it's toll. Just now realized I can't really control my left elbow properly no matter how much I want to. Might be fatigue but not from today's session but too regular sessions to the range.

My opinion is .. It is not how much you practice. It is whether you are practice correctly but rather just hitting 100 of balls and yet do not know you have learn or practice for.

I go driving range at least 2 times a week and in the course on Sat and Sun whatever I am free ... I only felt I practice too much when I still do not improve much on my swings ... I know I need professional help and will get one soon ........

Yes, agreed too much practice if you are doing it incorrectly .. No, like Gary Player say " The most I practice, the luckier I get "

RSC posted a really good link on practice.
You can practice putting, chipping, pitching, bunker, not only hitting balls in the range.

Ya agree with the routine which is what I try to do at the range. Basically practice like I'm at the course with all the clubs. But I think my frequency too much. Should cut down to max 2 times in the range maybe.

How many balls do you hit per session?
Do you take practice swing?

How many times a week at the range and how often do you play a week?

Golf practice should but not be limited to whacking balls on the range.

There's physical conditioning, short game, routine, drills.

Besides just hitting ball after ball on the range, sometimes its good to have a variety of different type of "practice" at the range. It can be pre-shot routine, alignment setup, drills. Short game practice is something that is often overlooked by most.

Its not really about quantity but rather more on quality. You must have a goal you want to achieve when you go to the range. It should not only be about going to hit balls. It should also be about practicing drills or what you have learnt during your previous lesson.

Before I go to the range, i ask my self what I want to achieve and I go there and try to achieve it.

i think maybe you are just getting used to the swing and using muscles that you previously did not.

you may like to dedicate a few session to your short game, it adds variety, relieve boredom, improve your game and less stress on your body.

for me, i always work on what i have gone through with my coach following a lesson.
so this week is just pitching with my wedges.

if i am working on a swing drill that he has taught me, then i hit less than 100 balls as i take 2 SLOW practice swing for 1 actual swing. less stress on the wrists, hands, elbow etc..not getting younger.

i go range about 4 times a week and play 18 holes at least once a week.

there are guys that i see at the range almost everyday and they also look like they are working on a specific part of their game instead of just swinging away. Some are also in GR and maybe they can share what they do/ try to do at the range.

Definitely working out the muscles which I did not use previously cos I dub even use any =x.
Ok looks like I'll be sitting down to do some planning. Alittle other exercise would be good for me. I always feel tired and I think might be due to my lack if exercise and over enthusiasm.

Thanks bros for the reminder. Along the way I kinda forgotten about load of things I need to do also like my grip starts to get slacker.

PostSubject: Re: Is it possible to have too much practice?   Fri Jun 25, 2010 1:55 am

When I was coming back to the game after a layoff, I found I couldn't hit the ball for the life of me. Went back to basics and just started hitting half shots, taking it back to 3 o clock and hitting through to 9 o clock. My focus then was on getting good contact. Kept hitting at least a couple of hundred balls this way until some semblance of a swing starting coming back. Then started adding some weight shift to the mix. When I was up to a full swing, I would still alternate between the half and full swing whenever I felt contact getting poor. Each time I found I improved, I added one more element to focus on, rebuilding my swing brick by brick like a house. Painstakingly frustrating at times, but I discovered things I never knew by breaking my swing down into parts and focusing on each part at a time. I ended up with the most solid ballstriking of my life.

The kicker is, I got complacent and didn't maintain it and my checks, I began to spend less time on the range, until I finally lost that swing. And I am still searching....

Lam Chih Bing said recently at a clinic to constantly check your positions and alignment, as even for the pros, in just a matter of a couple of weeks, alignment could have slipped without even knowing it.

I took my good swing for granted and let my positions and alignment slip, I wish I hadn't.

The point iterated in this thread by many is true. I've gone through the process of just pounding ball after ball, hoping the repeated process will make me good. Some days it worked, most days it didn't. Even when it worked, I didn't know what I did right. Working on a specific part of my swing forced me to see how each part contributed to the bigger whole. The rebuilding process of my swing made me realise the value of having a specific focus each time I picked up a bucket of balls.

Now I just need to re-apply myself the same way I did last time.... Someday!

Are you sure you only go to range 4 times a week? If that's the case, how can you see some guys at the range almost everyday? Picha lobang already. hahahaha

Bro, i said ALMOST everyday leh....you are the one that goes Mon to Fri (what about weekends?).
You should share about what you are doing to improve stamina for golf beside range leh.

I do get burned out by practicing too much. At times, i feel that i become a mechanical player and lose all the feel by hitting too many balls. It is good to have good fundamental, but once you become a mechanical player, you will suffer on the course.

For stamina, i'm trying to improve mine too. I'm trying to do some running which is important for cardio.

If you wait long enough, blister will turn to callus and it is the best armor for your hands. Not very nice looking but it works. Smile

When people shake my hand, they will think i work in construction. Smile

Don't grip the club too hard. If you have blister, this means you are gripping it too tight. The negative side is that you are stiffening your arm and slowing down your swing speed. I feel that these days i just try to grip the club loosely and as long as the glove and golf grip are tacky, the club will not fly out of your hands.

But sometimes, over practice and over grip can cause even calluses to tear off!!!
That was me few months back......had to wait for new calluses to form. Razz

Worse still is that i have a tendency to be itchy hand and try to tear them off my palms while watching TV. And after that, i will have to suffer during my next round of practice. Smile
