PostSubject: Pin IN or Pin OUT?   Sat Jun 26, 2010 10:56 pm

Tell you a secret, I have no freaking clue......on the course, I act macam pro only....sometime ask pin to be IN and sometimes OUT......(actually its more like alternate) when flight mate ask me....

Actually what should one take into consideration for such?

PS: I am asking when ball is near green

Tiger says downhill he ask for pin in as backstop.

Uphill then take it off.

if the ball is on the green, the pin must be taken out otherwise a penalty is incurred if the ball hits the pin and goes in...

if the ball is off the green, usually on the fringe, you have a choice on whether to take the pin out or not....

i think dave pelz did some research and that statistically speaking, it is better to leave the pin in if you are chipping, esp when it is downhill...

Pin in for me from off the green. Allows me to mentally be more aggressive with a greater margin for error. Even if I top the ball or chip too hard, the pin can stop the ball as long as the line is good. Pin in saved me from overshooting more than once, and it sure sounds good when you hear the "tank" and the ball drops in the hole. Very Happy

For me, I would normally let the pin stays in when it is a downhill chip or putt and take it out when the putting or chipping uphill. However, depending on the play of the day, if I keeps topping the ball, then I let the pin stays in to use as it to stop my ball from running way over.

Talked about leaving the pin in or out, I remembered that day at the 1st anniversary game. I had a chip from about 30 ft and it was rolling true towards the hole with just enough pace. It rolled towards the centre of the hole but only to be stopped by the pin. Guess what? The pin was leaning towards me and so when you straighten the pin to take it out of the hole, the ball just lie right at the rim. From a nearly lucky birdie to par....sigh... Sad

Was the ball 'leaning' into the hole? Someone once told me that you can straighten the pin so that the ball will go in and it is still counted.

Most of the time the pin is out for me except for downhill lies.
