PostSubject: Golf Club Distances   Mon Jun 28, 2010 4:25 pm

Here's an interesting fact: While PGA pros hit their drives anywhere from 280 yards to 320 yards on average, and LPGA pros hit their drives from 230 to 270 yards on average, most amateurs - according to Golf Digest - average somewhere around 195-205 yards with their drivers.

The yardages listed in the chart below show a range for average amateurs, both male and female. As you'll see, the ranges are quite large, and represent short hitters, mid hitters and long hitters. (There are, of course, people who hit it longer, just as there are people who hit it shorter.)

Club ..... Men ..... Women

Driver ..... 200-230-260 ..... 150-175-200
3-wood ..... 180-215-235 ..... 125-150-180
5-wood ..... 170-195-210 ..... 105-135-170
2-iron ..... 170-195-210 ..... 105-135-170
3-iron ..... 160-180-200 ..... 100-125-160
4-iron ..... 150-170-185 ..... 90-120-150
5-iron ..... 140-160-170 ..... 80-110-140
6-iron ..... 130-150-160 ..... 70-100-130
7-iron ..... 120-140-150 ..... 65-90-120
8-iron ..... 110-130-140 ..... 60-80-110
9-iron ..... 95-115-130 ..... 55-70-95
PW ..... 80-105-120 ..... 50-60-80
SW ..... 60-80-100 ..... 40-50-60

There is a greater gap, percentage-wise, between the longer and shorter women than there is between the longer and shorter men because better women players tend to be significantly longer than weaker women players. Especially compared to men. A male player who shoots 110 might be just as long as a guy who shoots 80. That is extremely unlikely in female players, however.

A final caveat: You can find charts such as this one on other sites around the Web. And if you do, one thing you'll notice is that the numbers rarely, if ever, match up. Because golf club distance depends more on the player than on the clubs.

I guess they measured it off the club to where the ball stops on a concrete floor. Considering if there's a good tail wind, 300 yards is no problem.

Basketball

Bro I guessed that you have never see it with your own eyes someone who drives 270 METRES right infront of you in person. Carry and not plus roll ! Go check out Timothy from our GR and you will be amazed. You see the ball take off infront of you and if you have quick eyes, you see the ball disappears right in front of you still going upwards towards the sky and it disappears from your view. SEEING IS BELIEVING ! Can ask the rest of the GRians here who have personally saw his drive. NO BS here !

These long shots I've seen. A few of them are in this forum. They are beautiful and amazing swings.
However, I have yet to see a hole in one personally. Now, that will be a miracle! Cheers!

nice stats!

lpga tour players averages are my goals: distance, carry, spin, launch angle etc. At least this is what i concluded from reading trackman's newsletter (from s70b, see thread on spin). I aint built like alvin, wmf, ghoonk or mc Very Happy

The lpga players play from similar tees, hit it flush and strong in woods play off deck to handle long holes.

Corn is an exception, not big in built but got fast, thieves' hands..kekeke

Titu, your "distance" is misleading.... think i was abt one club longer than you (8-10m diff) but you would still reach the green earlier or same time as i did. So bros, distance without direction is still no good kekekeke

my driver, 3 wood (i assume off the deck) is on the mid to high range Smile ........of the womens chart Sad

we are talking average here correct (minus the occasional air swings or those really really bad shots where the ball travels 10-20m), not the best shot.

if i am not wrong, the figures are for European players....must take some % off for Asian average.

Wahhh good work in the conversion man!

Yes, USA and Middle Eastern yardages are in Yards, not meters.

Anyway, what is interested is to see if your clubs staggered at this 4* intervals are consistent (approximately) in the increase in yardages.

The distance seem abit short leh. I don't think a long hitter amature can only hit 137 m for 7 iron.

Wah...looking at the stats, I am very amazed and full of admiration.....

I must be on the other side of the scale..

6 iron: 80m - 140m
7 iron: also 80m - 130m
8 iron: 70m - 120m
9 iron: also 70m - 110m
PW: also 70m - 100m
AW : 1m - 70m
SW : also 1m - 50m
Putter: 0.00000000001 m - 20m ++++

as you can see...chiak lak...so many overlap.....no wonder no GIR

I think one key thing to remember is that clubs from different manufacturers have different lofts and loft increments. Also, lofts from the modern game improvement and super game improvement sets are much stronger compared to the older models.

On some of the taylor made GI sets, the loft on the 7 iron is like a 5 iron and the shaft length is like a 6 iron, is it any surprise then that the distance is like a 5 iron?

End of the day, I guess if you can hit the ball to within 10 feet of the flag from 150m consistently, I don't think it matters if you are using a wood, long iron, mid iron or short iron.

The chart just talks about distances but doesn't make any reference to handicap. So it could very well mean that there are people who are in the "short hitter" category but actually play to a very low handicap coz of their consistency.

I've got a kaki who uses a 5W for 150m, and drives the ball probably max 180m, but he's dead accurate and plays in the high 70s.

I'm quite sure some of you who poke fun at yourselves about hitting it short fall in the same category of this friend i mentioned..

Agree, but I guess these are averaged figures.. and they usually refer to carry distances only and not the total including roll.

If this is about carry distance, then it is pretty accurate.
