Mardan Shows His Steel in Malaysia

August 18, Kuala Lumpur: Singapore’s Mardan Mamat drew upon his vast experience in the game to take the first round lead in the Mercedes-Benz Masters Malaysia today with a six-under-par 66 despite having to play while fasting.

Thailand’s Pariya Junhasavasdikul finished the day in second place with a 68 at Kota Permai Golf and Country Club while his compatriot Pornpong Phatlum carded a 69.

Mamat, aged 42, is well known for being a player who can still play at his best during the month of Ramadan - the Islamic month of fasting, in which Muslims refrain from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset.

He recorded a bogey free round and made birdies on holes 1, 3 and 5 while on the homeward stretch shots birdies on 12, 13 and 16.

“I have been playing the game a long time so of course I am used to playing in tournaments while fasting. I have also played this course many times so that helps. It is a great start and nice not to drop any shots,” said Mamat.

He finished joint fifth in last week’s Mercedes-Benz Masters Singapore, which is the tournament he won last year and remains as his sole victory on the Mercedes-Benz Tour.

The Singaporean looks like being the man to beat this week and his first round performance is the continuation of a fine season so far which has been highlighted by his joint fifth place finish in the US$1million Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta on OneAsia.

Pariya, who claimed the Mercedes-Benz Masters Singapore in 2008, also did not drop shot and made two birdies on each nine.

“I played well last week in Singapore so I am on a nice run now and hoping for a good week again. I have won once before on the Mercedes-Benz Tour and I am really eager to win again,” said the highly rated 26 year old from Bangkok.

Pariya is a graduate of Purdue University in the United States and during a his spare time in Bangkok takes to the air as he has a pilots license

R. Nachimuthu and Akhmal Tarmizee are the leading Malaysians have shot 70 along with Thanyakon Khrongpha - the young Thai star who won this year’s Kariza Indonesia Championship on the Mercedes-Benz Tour.

S. Sivachandran, the in-from Malaysian currently ranked number one on the local circuit shot a 71, while Danny Chia returned a 72.

Filipino Juvic Pagunsan, currently ranked second on the Mercedes-Benz Tour Order of Merit came in with a 72, while his countryman Jay Bayron, who is third on the Merit list, shot 75.

The US$60,000 event finishes on Saturday with the winner earning a cheque for US$9,750

CONGRATULATIONS TO MARDAN!

MM won in playoff - just one hole needed. Really admirable effort considering that he is fasting this month.

Mardan was very steady & patient today. I didn't notice any major errors in his round today. Khun Pariya couldn't get it close enough for makeable birdies. Danny on the other hand seemed rather affected by a few big mistakes. Kudos to Mardan!

MM is off to the Omega Masters in Switzerland next week. he sounds and looks confident in the last 3 months and oddly enough so does Chris Rodgers..between the 2, they will win again this year. of course there is LCB who you never know can just explode into the lead.

Justin Han is learning and adapting fast and another year touring, i am sure we will see great results from our top lefty.

great tournaments coming up - the Handa and the Barclay.

Tks bro Botak. Am keeping Justin in my lookout list as I regard him as a future potential in Singapore. Just take a bit of time for him to familiarize to the pressure of the professional circuit itself. All the best Justin. Just hang in there and the day will come when you stand in the centre of the winner stand. Patience is the key.

MM's work in the Masters is all the more impressive when you consider that he is fasting.

3 strokes behind the Thai guy.....hopefully he can overtake the guy.

Come on MM!

its got nothing to do with patience Titu...

there are 3 things that a top golfer must have before they can win...

1. skills
2. mental
3. the art of winning

if you look at Nick Watney, he blew it last week after leading for 3 rounds. Dustin did the same thing at the US Open...but their time will come once they learn the 3rd element...usually the hard way. some bounce back but others don't...like Jean Van De Velde.

in golf we can sense the "killing instinct" very early. ask Slinger who played with some thai pros last week. the best of the lot was a skinny 17 year old whose only objective on course is to make birdies. once his hormone settle in, he will be a force.

Eric, that is why I am in where I am. Only see from layman's view ha ha. You are probably right. But just giving him encouragement. Fell down, stand up and walk again. Keep trying and through this initial experiences, will one day know what has to be done to win. Jia you JUstin... cheers

titu...

i have 3 players telling me in the last month that they will win again this year.

MM is one of them and CR is the other one...you know why i know? you can see it in their eyes when they say that and you know its going to happen. besides the big one at Ballantine, Mardan has several good finishes and the Asean Tour event. i still think he can pull off a big win and i hope Chris can win a top event soon.

but the last pro from Thailand is the one i spend the most time talking to and when he wins, i know its going to be very special for me. and lets not forget Martin Rominger.
