Cut back on the portion of processed carbs like white rice, white bread, noodles.
Instead replace with vegetables. Include protein (fish, white meat) in your diet so more balance.

Have smaller meals (e.g. have snacks like fruits or nuts) but more frequent. It actually increases metabolism rate.
Stay away from empty calories like sweet drinks, junk food.

Lastly, exercise at least 2-3 times per week ( Swing can be counted also).

I've been struggling with this for years. So, I'm not one person to take advice from. That being said, I think a steady regiment of meals in moderation, exercise (at least 45 minutes of cardio) and determination helps.

Hi jaketang,

I've tried many diets along the way, as I used to be really fat (have since lost 10kg, literally have before and after photos Razz ). Hope I can share some info with you.

Not sure if you have heard of glycemic index (GI) of foods before? From what I understand, GI refers to the rate at which our bodies break down and absorb carbohydrates, which affects our sugar levels in our bodies. The more stable our sugar levels are, the slower we are to feel hungry after a meal. High GI foods tend to cause our suger levels to spike quickly, but at the same time, causes it to drop fast, thus resulting in our feeling of hunger. We can help control our appetites if we can replace our diets with lower GI foods.

Here's a list of low GI foods versus high GI foods:

Low GI foods: most fruits and vegetables (except potatoes, watermelon), grainy breads, pasta, legumes/pulses, milk, products extremely low in carbohydrates (fish, eggs, meat, some cheeses, nuts, cooking oil), brown rice.

High GI foods (try to avoid unless after an intensive workout or when you have a physically demanding day ahead): corn flakes, rice krispies, baked potatoes, watermelon, croissants, white bread, extruded breakfast cereals.

Knowing more about the GI of foods can help us curb our hunger better,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glycemic_index.

But to really lose the pounds and inches, the amount of calories we take in has to be less than the calories we expend. I read somewhere that to lose 2lbs, we have to have a deficit of 500 calories per day for one week.

It'll be a good start by reading the nutritional labels on food products that we buy from the supermarkets, as they tend to have indications of the number of calories within. Just have to note the serving size, as some products try to fool you into thinking they are low in calories by having a smaller serving size.

Besides controlling our calorie intake, we also have to do more physical activities that we enjoy (e.g. playing golf, running, er, running after XMM if that gives you more motivation Laughing, climbing up the stairs when you go to BFG, etc.) Hehe.

I think it is very challenging to lose weight in a food heaven like Singapore, but I hope you'll stay strong and may this bit of info help you in your quest to find a healthier you! cheers

few ppl forgot that balanced diet consist of carbs, protein and fats and some ppl avoid one for another which is no good.

Basically eat in moderation. Eat small meals. Eat many meals. If you are the extreme, go for the grandma diet.

Grandma diet means: if grandma never had a chance to eat it when she was young, you shouldn't eat too. So no fries, no chips etc....

Exercise regularly.

Simple tips:

Eat vege and fibrous food before you eat your meal. Tend to eat lesser. Chew and eat your food slowly. You digest better and allow your brain to receive the hormonal signal in time for you to realise you are full. If not you will overeat.

Take a fruit with every meal.

Avoid empty calories. IE calories with no nutrients. Out goes coke

Fruits=good, fruit juice=bad

Eat carbs early and take the fats later in the day. Fats are essential to build your hormones. Carbs are used to replenish glycogen to make your muscle works. You do not need your muscles to work when sleeping. Excess carbs/fats/proteins or anything are converted to fats. Your body process carbs better earlier so eat them early.

I can go on and on but if you do this you should be fine.

I used to do Atkins at one point of time, lost close to 10kg (many donkey years ago). After that stopped and gain it back. There is also other dieting which looks at calories.

I took up atkins...coz i like meat!! Anyway, there are side effect if you do not follow it closely i.e. constipation if you lack of fiber and water intake & high uric acid. However, cholesterol count, it is very good but granted if you take enough exercise.

Basis in dieting as explained by TSL & Sunny is very true. Watch out for yr carbo intake/GI, exercise regularly, moderate food in-take and drink lots water.

Ask Mr UL, he is fit... Take up dancing with him...
