PostSubject: Singapore Amateur Championship   Wed Aug 25, 2010 6:24 pm

This week the 63rd Singapore Amateur Championship is being played at Warren Golf and CC.

After round 2, my student Edgar Oh is in the lead by 2 strokes after rounds of 71 and 73.

http://www.sga.org.sg/Default.aspx?PageID=610

I was quite amazed at how this 14 year old handled himself the first 2 rounds. He was paired with Choo Tze Huang who is Singapores top ranked amateur and outplayed him in all areas of the game. Although Choo was outdriving him by 20-30 metres all day, Edgars right sided swing held up under the pressure and allowed him to hit shots that Choo was unable to, i.e down slopes, side slopes, fades, draws.

Honestly speaking Edgar could be even further in front if it wasn't for a cold putter.

14 year olds are not supposed to play like this are they??

I have confidence that he can continue his good form over the last 2 rounds. Fingers crossed and if he wins he will gain entry into the Barclays Singapore Open.

Thanks.....I hope my mental also can survive. I think I was more nervous than Edgar today.

The 3rd round started off unbelievable when he made an eagle on the Par 4 first hole. He holed out from 170 metres with a 5 iron. What a shot and the start of what was an unusual round.

From there he 3 putted the 3rd for bogey, then bogey on 4th, 5th and 7th to be at 2 over. Then on 9 he hit a 6 iron to 3 feet for a birdie. Things got crazy as he then proceeded to miss the putt, it went down the hill and ended 40 feet away. If you know the greens at Warren you will understand how this is possible. He then takes 3 more putts resulting in a double bogey 6 and 4 over for the round. What looked like a birdie soon become a double bogey just like that and from here on his putting looked very shaky.
Luckily the rest of the leaders were also dropping a lot of strokes and he still had the lead.

Things turned around on the back nine and Edgar managed to par all the way up to 15 where he birdied the par 5. On 17 he hit another miracle shot and chipped in from just off the green to take a 2 stroke lead. A solid par on the tough 18th hole and he finished on +2 and remained in the lead after 3 rounds.

It was a strange round of golf on an extremely tough course with some ridiculous pin positions. The scores were very high and tomorrow will be even tougher.

After the round he seemed very calm and relaxed but told me he was very nervous. I still feel he can win this as his ball striking has been flawless all week. It will come down to his putting and how he handles the tough greens and pin positions at WGCC. He has some very good international players not far behind him. I will be there to support him all the way.

I still find it hard to believe that a 14 year old can do what he is doing. A definite champion in the making for Singapore golf regardless of the outcome tomorrow. I wish him all the best

Good showing so far. Should be his if he keeps it steady instead of spectacular for the final round as that course is tough from the back.

Choo has been having a bit of rust since he injured himself earlier this year. I believe he will be playing better if given somemore time.

Just a question off my mind... Since Edgar shows such a great potential, will he be able to serve NS by playing golf? I know there are such arrangements for other sports...

They will still do NS.

They will however, very likely be posted to units or departments where they can devote sufficient time to practice their game.

And if they don realize their potential, does it mean they will need to go back and do the SOP ?

Thanks everyone for the congrats.

The next thing is preparing for the Barclays Singapore Open. We still have a lot of areas to work on in Edgars game to keep improving.

A big factor to his win last week was a result of teaching him how to fade the ball from left to right and also improving his shots on down hill lies. His natural ball flight has always been a right to left draw so he worked hard the last couple of months trying to learn the fade. There was some frustration along the way but he now has the swing which can shape the ball both ways.

The putting also needs some attention and we will spend some time fine tuning that.

In qualifying for the Barclays, he has become the third youngest player to play in a European Tour event, ahead of the likes of Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia.

We had a celebratory dinner with his family last night and the parents are still in shock that he was able to win this event. It was 2 years ago that he was just able to make the cut in the same tournament to now being the winner.

He has put his name on the trophy which includes some well known players such as Thaworn Wirichant and Thongchai Jaidee.
