Have tried the S2 Max Iron on Steel and Nike VR full cavity on Graphite....Nike is on sale now...Graphite set for S$540...4-PW, TM Burner Plus and Cobra S2 Max from TGW.com is U$599.99 (TM, Graphite) and U$499.00 (S2 Max, Steel) both come with 3H, 4H, 5-PW.

So cannot make up my mind.... confused
I am a 4mth old newbie. Got my S2 max iron/ hybrid set from TGW.com. Personally, as a
newbie, give me what club also about the same. Like what the bro eiji mentioned, S2 Max is
considered as SGI (super game improvement) iron, just like any other brands with irons falling
under this category. Its like u just pass ur driving test, do u think honda/ toyota etc will make
a difference?

If it will make it any easier for u, for me, I decided on the brand Cobra and "build" my golf set
around it as I prefer to be 1 in most instead of most in 1. So far, I'm enjoying my S2 Max Very Happy

Hope the above helps bro Smile

altisd, if you are really intent on just these three sets, I suggest you test drive them and make some notations as to how they perform vis a vis your swing.

Perform the same evaluation with each set so you come away with tangible comparisons.

Hit several shots with the 5 iron, 8 iron, and PW. Hit half swings and chips with the wedge too since it will be used for a lot of such shots. Then note down how you like the feel of the club on impact, how high or low the ball flight is, how consistent the impact is, how much dispersion there is. With each model, do you tend to top or duff the ball more, or get better impact? And how each model tends towards more of a draw, fade, or straight ball flight.

Then you can decide from there.

With due respect to the brothers here, a lot of recommendations are based on the person's own experience with the club with their own swing unique to themselves. Make a decision on the club for you based on your own swing. You won't ask people to test drive a car for you and if they say good, you just buy right? You buy based on how the car drives for you, fits your needs, and your budget.

If you are confused, it might help to have a more experienced friend interpret your ball flight with each model.

Thanks birdman for sharing a detailed way of club selection. It will be useful for me when I am gg to look for my second set of irons . I made a mistake as ppl say I am quite big sized and tell me to get steel shaft for 1st set, yesterday I tried graphite for the first time and boy the shots were pretty much consistent. Hence I am now shopping for my second set of irons already .

Hmmm i have the strength of a bull how Laughing

On a serious note i hit the gym often and lifts heavy weight but end state i am more comfortable with graphite shaft. I just don't know why. When i take my friend's tm XR iron i just held it with such confidence and i believe all my shots will be pretty decent . How do a person really know when he needs to change from graphite to steel ?

There are no hard and fast rules on whether you should use graphite or steel. Essentially, the shaft is the engine that produces the results. The results are then a mix of both tangible (ball flight and distance) and intangible (golfer's feel and comfort). A clubfitter will go with the tangible first then speak with you on fine tuning for the intangible.

I started out with steel (that was what was widely available then), then switched to graphite (softer feedback and more distance) for years, and have just very recently switched back to steel again (heavier weight makes me swing the club and meatier feel at impact). And I am not as strong as you for sure.

If you want to know for sure when to switch from one to the other, you have to walk down the dark side and consult a clubfitter. I say dark side cos many who have taken that path end up tinkering around with one thing after another. Just ask the most famous in GR, Muar Chee, who's got some terrible affliction in his backside. Thanks for your input. I guess when i develop a more consistent swing then i will pop by a fitter. It's the indian not the bow i guess. I was very inclined to get a PING fitted set but knowing myself that different days i can do different things, i rather stay out and develop my swing first before i make any decision

I know of a local pro who just played 1 under in a recent Asia tour.
He is using a 1990s model iron head fitted with graphite shaft.
He did tried to change to Ping but was not able to adapt and ended using his old iron set.

I agree with Birdman earlier no difference really.. just get a set u r comfy with in terms of price, brand, build quality and work on ur game.. guess if ur swing is consistent for drivers, irons, wedges n putters u shd be fine with all.. i like Birdman's analogy of which car to drive after getting license!
Myself i bought Cobra's S2 Max irons/ hybrids set with graphite regular flex even tho i am 1.8m and on heavy side .. LOL! and at this stage of the game i just need to get used to the clubs!

Hi to all GRian,

Thanks so much for all the valuable feedback, especially to Birdman on his expert insight...might not have the luxury of testing all the clubs as mentioned, but sure will make efforts to test out a few before deciding...at least there's a direction now for me to follow before coming to a decision!

Cheers!!!
