PostSubject: Yamaha 2010 inpres X Classic Driver   Wed Sep 22, 2010 8:51 am

Yamaha has always focused on creating a special driver for those with slower swing speed or more senior golfers wanting more distance. In the past, the GRX line filled this niche by creating a premium driver from the best materials and design and technology Yamaha had.

Yamaha is proud to introdude the new 2010 inpres X Classic line, made for more distance and performance then ever.

Yamaha did some research with slower swinging golfers and seniors who wanted more distance and found that with a longer length shaft AND lighter swing weight, players increased their swing speeds by a substantial margin as well as their distances by over 10 yards on average!

The new classic driver has a premium forged ELF Titanium Cup face (Endo) with new Octaface Classic design which increases the sweet spot by 24% over the GRX!

A special bulge and roll design creates a huge sling shot effect and great ball speeds at impact. The CG is placed for maximum carry with low spin based on Yamaha's RPM concept which is also used on their standard inpres X drivers.

The new Orbit shaft for the Classic driver features a double kickpoint, low and high, which helps the longer shaft unload and square to the ball it impact. The Classic is also draw biased and 0.5* closed to ensure a straight to soft draw by making it easier to square the longer club.

The Classic is not only long but also very light weight with all flexes coming in at under 280g making this one of the lighest drivers on the market.

For those who want and need distance in a forgiving package, the inpres X Classic driver is an awesome choice.

Available in 10.5 and 11.5* lofts, 9.5* is a 3 week custom order and only available with stiff/regular flex.

Club is made in Japan at Endo. Headcover made in China.

pan west is the official distributor of yamaha and you should be able to view it at any pan west outlet, i saw it at suntec city but they do not have an area for club testing there so you might want to try another location?

smoky black colour head seemed to the flavour these days... even the new SuperMax continues the black finish from the SuperTri (since SuperQuad days??)...

Ping i15 is black

Upcoming Titleist 910 is also black head

this one from Yamaha is also in smoking hot-looking black head!

Cristel, the good news is, the older model D201 is selling for $799. Bad news is, still not cheap. Good news again is, you get made in Japan quality, including the shaft. Which is a good shaft as told to me by a clubfitter. If you can find the even older 4.6ST, PanWest retails it at $599.

Not sure of the price of the Inpres X Classic, but it's the latest, so bound to be four figure.

I was curious as to whether the ever longer shafts from the old standard of 43 half inches to the current standard of 46 inches actually gives more distance to shorter hitters like myself. So I tested my own driver of 45 inches against 46 inch ones and the 47 inch Yamaha GRX with the help of a prominent clubfitter and Trackman. My results, I got the best consistent distance out of my own 45 inch driver. The worst results came from 47 inch GRX.

Sitting down with the clubfitter, he explained that not everyone will gain distance from a longer shaft. Some just play better with shorter ones for reasons of swing and physical build. Everyone has an optimum length at which they can comfortably swing their driver for optimum distance, you just have to find out which it is. And I was told the reason I hit my own driver best is because I was already familiar with it and grooved to it's swing plane. I'm still thinking of getting a longer shaft and seeing if acclimatising myelf to it will make a difference in distance, but I certainly won't go to 47 inches, it was incredibly difficult to time the swing right, like swinging a bamboo pole.

As a parting shot, here's something I found on the net:

At least one well-known instructor, Don Trahan, father of PGA Tour player D.J. Trahan, has been advocating shorter drivers for years.

“When the standard driver went to 45 inches, it made me sick,” said the animated Trahan. “That’s too long for just about everybody on this planet. And it’s not just accuracy that I’m talking about. I tell golfers they can hit the ball farther with shorter drivers because they can make more solid contact. If you are serious about shooting lower scores, get a shorter driver.”

Go figure, obviously instructors and manufacturers don't agree on the optimum driver length.

I did read that PGA tour players shafts averaging 44.5in. If these guys are going at this length what about mere mortals like ourselves?

well, personally i hit my longest with a 48 inch driver but i am still trying to find a driver that i like at 44 inch length... cos i know that my dispersion would improve greatly...
