there is no substituting practice.

first thing I would suggest is to identify the weaknesses in your game. At every game, record key stats like (a) hit / miss fairway, (b) GIR, (c) sand shots (d) number of putts. This will allow you to narrow down what typically costs you strokes. once you id your weakness, you can then (i) practice to improve on this area and (ii) have better course management to avoid putting yourself in situations where your weakness will be exposed

breaking 100 is really mainly about course management. As long as you avoid big numbers, breaking 100 should be no problem

breaking 90 takes a bit of practice. Most recreational golfers who are at the stage of trying to break 90 will usually be hitting 4-6 GIRs per round, so the key is to be able to get up and down for par. So to me, breaking 90 is about having a good short game. Most people spend 90% of their time hitting full shots on the range. I would suggest spending equal or more time hitting chips and pitches.

breaking 80 I think is all about practice, and possibly some talent. I've yet to achieve it so I can't say.

And finally, no matter what score you are chasing, one lesson I learnt is to stay patient, calm and just enjoy the game and the company. I've been guilty of getting frustrated and upset during the game, which only makes things worse. I would highly recommend reading books like "Golf is not a game of perfect" and "Zen golf"  for those who want to improve the mental aspect of the game.

Cheers!

If breaking 100 is the most important objective for you when you when u next play golf, all you need to do is keep your driver at home and play for bogey for every hole.

Once you can break 100 consistently and want to break 90, then focus on putting the ball on the green in regulation for the par 3's and par 5's.  You can still keep your driver at home.

The real challenge here is, do u have the self control to keep the driver at home?????

If one has a decent long and short game, good course management is the key to not only breaking 90 but also 85 ... Wink

Had the honour to play with a scratch player.
The hindrance for me has always been those 2-3 heroic blown holes.. Haha

It's been 3 games since I managed to maintain double par free but due to my inconsistent drive, iron, wedge and putting, I m still playing in the Low-mid 90s.

Now focusing on my swing for:
Driver - keep it within the fairway
Irons- Better contact thus less top, duff or shank.
Putting - keep within 2 putts limit

Since it's been 3 games, you can safely say you are no longer a double Par player  cheers

If one wanna score in the single digit region, it is altogether a different ball game ... Approach shot and chipping must be accurate ... Meaning that your club yardage must be accurate. Of course single handicapper must be a 2-putt player max (most of the time if not one) ...

I have seen a few single-handicappers whose drives are not long but they would almost always split the fairway ... Their approach shots are dead accurate usually ...

To be a scratch player, one really needs certain amount of talent as hard training alone may not get u there ...

As a social golfer who plays once or twice a month, I would be very pleased if I could score below 85 most of the time ... Smile

Turbo,

Wow, below 85 by playing 1-2 games a month.
How I wish I can break below 100 if I play 1-2 games a month.

Hi Chris,

That is only wishful thinking on my part, dude ... Currently my score is 88-93 depending on the course I play ... Last Friday game at Ria Bintan Ocean Blue and Forest courses @ Blue tee was 92 (gross) ... My female caddy was superb ... Lots of guidance from her on reading line of putt ... Smile

I agree with ChrisD. Playing 2 games a month and still shooting 80s is phenomenal. . If you play every week then you could be playing 70s.. high time to consider turning pro Turbo!

I played with a 65yr old guy at SCC 2 weeks back. His drive is never long but all his irons or wood is low and priecing yet accurate. He told me he play once a month. He scored 84 that day.

My playing buddy is a scratch player, represented Uni in Arizona back in the day. Before we tee off every hole he always chant "fairways & greens". Maybe that's his secret!

Golfnut @

All thanks to ur advises during our short chat. I was able to manage my game well and reduce my score. Hopefully I can maintain the lucky streak to play below 90.
