PostSubject: How to Swing in-to-out?   Mon Aug 17, 2009 10:46 am

hello!

Need some tips on improving my swing, in particular Driver!!

People keep saying we should swing in-to-out.
But many people like me often swing out-to-in, leading to super-slice especially for driver.

While keeping this in-to-out swing advice in mind, I still do not know how in practice, I can execute it.

Any tips to make my swing natural on in-to-out?

bro, tricky question....

if anyhow answer, wait kana hamtam by others leh.. hahaha

actually someone told me b4... in order for us to execute in-to-out swing, we canot take the club from the inside during the back swing...(which most of us guilty in doin it)

try to maintain the club head straight back for maybe 1st 6-10 inches back instead of goin straight to the inside.....

opps... not sure if it is right?... heehee anyway, tht's wat i m trying to do... Embarassed

I have tot about it for quite sometime and tried both way..

Usually I take club back, maintaining straight.
Recently I tot for awhile and tried to take back, inside as soon as I swing back.

For iron, I hit better maintaining straight.
For Driver, not too much slice if I take it inwards as soon as I swing back.

So, now I am confused. keke.

You know Roy....It cud also be bc you are releasing your club too early on the downswing.

Tat was my problem. Oh yes, Too fast a swing speed does nto help too, cos it causes your hands to flip as i din know how to control my hands at that speed. That was my problem too.

I can't share with you what wil work but I can share with you what I am working on right now which is still not realli working.....hopefully this will help you and others thru elimination approach:

for me, I tried to 'kiap' my right armpit (coz i right hander) ie make sure no gap at my armpit till I reach my backswing.....supposedly to keep me in-out..

Disclaimer: My backswing is what some ppl will call 1/2 swing and pls don ask me what is my carrry fm tee...paiseh...ps: ppl call me pee-shooter

There are a few common reasons why golfers cant swing in to out which I will mention shortly. But why you would want to swing in to out anyway? This can be just as bad as out to in. It will give you a block/push right meaning you will have to flip hands at impact to make ball go straight. Most that come over the top have an open clubface causing slice so trying to swing in to out still with an open clubface will now make it worse at the ball will start right and go further right. Not good! Actually worse.
Some common reasons why golfers cant swing in to out are
1. Reverse Pivot
2. Week grip
3. Excessive clearing of hips
4. Incorrect set up positions
5. Overturn of hips and shoulders
6. Incorrect wrist angles

Without seeing someones swing it is hard to say why but I will post some pictures of the above reasons so all can get a good understanding of what not to do.

What I have tried to do is to move my right foot back, so it's like left foot front and right foot back. I find myself getting the ball going much more straighter with this drill.

maybe this drill can tell me something about my swing...

This is a great drill as it gives you the correct turn and reduces the excessive hip clearing. Give you alot more room to get the club to come back more from inside. I use this drill very often and alot of my students use it on the course when playing as they hit the ball so much better.

I've recently tried doing this too and I've also realized that it does help. However, I've also noticed that this increases the chance of me pulling my shot, i.e. releasing my club horizontally more than vertically. As a result, the ball hooks.

anything to the extreme will do more harm then good....

drills are meant to give you some guide lines n ideas...

best.... look for a respectable pro to "clear up" your thoughts and what you have been doing....

Another misconception is WHAT are you trying to swing in to out?? Is it the the club head or is it the hands and arms? Most believe it is the clubhead which is not the case. Try swinging your hands and arms inside and around your body. Swinging the club head inside will lead to your hands and arms moving out and away from your body and the big shot Right unless you FLIP it!!

This video will hopefully shed some light

No fat jokes either please lol!

Excessive clearing comes usually from you being too far back behind at top of backswing. As you need to shift along way back to your left side to get back to impact. This is achieved by being very active with lower body (clearing). It is something Tiger use to do alot but hows now minimised. (2 knee ops will do that) If you clear to much you will either come over top or get stuck behind and block right!!

Wow, so many advices. THanks thanks.
Actually, my objective is not to do the extreme of in-to-out.
But basically to cure my out-to-in and meanwhile execute a slight draw would be nice for the ball to roll more. (Only for driver.. Iron & hybrid, I wan ball to sit.)

Out of the 6 common reasons, I cun ascertain but likely to be point 5 and 6.
Not sure wat's reverse pivot.
When I m back in Singapore, I video cam myself and let u check.
But is there any minimum requirement of how many fps video cam?

Wish to go to pro for rectification but 3/4 time I am abroad.

Also, by moving right leg back, I knew that it would cure some slices but I would like to see if I can resolve the root cause.
Anyway, temporarily I shall move my right leg back. keke.
