i am just a little anal.. so i just put done the analysis a little bit.. hehe

suppose for par 4 and 5s.. average distance for each is like 340-400 and 420-580 meters

a long driver will be hitting 280-300 meters smelly smelly?

so the second shot in is averaging 100 meters for par 4 and 120-300 meters for par 5.

So for the Par 4s and shorter Par 5s, and being in the fairway, being a long driver really helps i would guess, as the second shot is already looking to get on the green. that makes about 10 to 12 holes per round of 14 holes (par 4 and 5s) where you would be looking at a 2 on!

conversely if i hit it short, say 200m at best. On Par 4s, i'm still 140 meters away at best and 200m at worst.
and on a Par 5, i'm still 220m away at best and 380m at worst.

that makes me going for the green by the third shot on 5 par 4 holes and none of the par 5s.

I then have the result as follows;
Long Drive: 2 on in 10/14 holes at worst
Short Drive: 2 on in 5/14 holes at best
so that means a 5 stroke differential on paper.

What do you think? any flaws in my reasoning?

duval is bery good with no GIRs but save par most times....

Ghoonk, GB and me recently played with a golfer once before claiming he is a 18 handicapper. He does not hit long (in fact, he hits shorter than us) and needs 3 on for par 4s. But anything below 100m, he gets it close to the pin for one putts. I think he got the most pars among the 4 of us. you say...

@slinger, hmm yes, i guess a 5 to 7 stroke differential could easily be lost by duffing and bad putting..

good putting: 32 putts per round
bad putting: 38 putts per round
6 strokes differential

duffing the approach.. anywhere from 1 to i don't know? 20?

So the killer SBs like Duval can shave off all the duffing and 6 putts on the putting.
so good putting makes up for the shorter drive?

put in GR context:

If you drive long and got no short game: aspiring beginner (90-105)

if you drive short and good in short game: seasoned beginner (85-90)

if you drive ok and good in short game: super seasoned beginners (80-85)

if you are long and and good in short game: star division (72-80)

if you are neither long off the tee nor can chip/pitch: real beginners (>105)

this is what i observe, not theory only. i bet most single hc players here are quite long.

there will always be couple of par4s that will be tough.... so play smart, unlikely can on the green, just swallow some pride n layup before the greenside hazard on some nice chipping rough... then let your short game do the magic

same for par5s, dun 2 on, just layup 20-30m before the green, away from all hazards n do a duval chip, confirm birdie...

Duval chip is similar to poresia's chip. Hands forward, open stance, use lower lofted wedge. Ball run low, with few hops, stop at gimme distamce.

I want to see blee's chip, to finish my research on SB phenomenon.

If playing off the whites..

long is good for par 4s only..leaving a very short chip...but then again for season beginners, a 80m pitch may be easier than a 40m chip

Par 5s..unlikely to get 2 on..unless its a really easy par 5 with unprotected green. Also trying to get out of the bunker/ chipping at a severe angle on elevated greens/chipping from a long rough is way harder than a 80m pitch.

Black tees on the other hand....

If you can play off black tees, you should be driving long and straight. No doubts about it.
