PostSubject: Need help on driver   Sun Dec 05, 2010 9:38 pm

Played at TP today and found that my ball just landed on the fairway and did no roll more than 1 m. Even had a backspin on one of my shot.
Btw my driver swing weight is E9 with a fujikura E360 stiff shaft and E2 with a RIP ALDILA X-stiff 60g shaft.
How can I make sure that my ball will round to give me an extra 10m or so.

U know the movie 'Thor' is coming soon in 2011

R u the lead actor? affraid

Serious note, were u fitted for ur driver shafts in the 1st place or not? Or u just plug n play? Even if u adopt that method, some basic knowledge of the spin, LA n smash factor will help in ur own questions.

I need help. If I am not wrong, place to a D2 with my previous driver but dispersion was great but distance was great, with this E9 not much wayward shot but distance is greatly affected as the ball just land on the fairway and not roll .... even on a hard ground.
This kind of sad as I have been seeing ZX ball roll away from me and also short of him 50m or more.... sigh how to hit more than 200m ...

Bro Chrisd, I also use to have the same problem. But after changing my driver to a lower loft (7.5 degree) my ball starts to have more roll. But provided you must be able to launch the ball high with a lower lofted driver. Can give it a try first. Want to use my driver for a test, just call me.. Very Happy
As for your driver swing weight, really too heavy liao lah.. Shocked

I had the same problem when I tried the 80x shaft during the 910 fitting; my ball just drop from the sky like apache crash landing halfway through its flight

Equipment aside... Have never seen you swing but how is your ball flight?
Is a mid height penetrating trajectory or a towering skyscraper kind of trajectory!!!

I too have a Driver in the E9 range... That's when I combine my R9 with my Bubba Watson Pink shaft in Regular flex...

Quite fun to try on trackman!!!

My ball flight will be mid high and when I play E9 and Mid when I play E2.
Both ball will just drop and stay around the area.
Jon, u have tons of driver. Can advise which driver or swing weight gives you a better roll on the fairway. Played with my friend today and was always short about 10m from him.
Desperately need to get back my driver distance.

I struggled with the same problem until I checked the stats on a Trackman.... My driver spin was almost 6,000 RPM!!!! Shocked That's more than double of what's usually recommended.

Without first seeing you hit the driver, and understanding your driver specs, the E2 & E9 SW sounds quite far off. However, if your driver shots really get this "too much backspin" problem even with the Aldila RIP X-flex 60g shaft, then you may have built your driver too long or added too much weight to the driver head.

With the Aldila 60g shaft on a standard 200g driver head & 50g grip, your driver needs to be about 47.5" to reach E2 SW. Or you need to add about 18g to your driver head to reach E2 SW at 45". Both these combinations would soften the Aldila shaft very significantly.

My guess is either:
1. you are a very tall golfer (>1.8m), &/or
2. you are very strong

Again, without seeing you hit the ball, and assuming your drivers are of E2 & E9 SW, then you should be using heavier shafts to better regulate your tempo instead. Try something in range of 75-95g. Stiff or X-flex. Keep the torque below 3.0 and the length to about 44-45" and I think you'll do fine.

The best thing is of course a fitting session with the Trackman. Just the thing to reward yourself for Christmas... santa

Used to have the same problem, using tour burner stock stiff shaft... now roll more... still using the same driver...

For me the spin is too high and the ball will climb then drop from the sky...

Not sure if SW makes a difference to the spin rate but from my knowledge, the angle of attack will affect the spin rate...

Hi Chris... My go to driver right now is a R9 shafted with a UST Mamiya Avixcore 69S cut to 44 inches... This driver gives me quite abit of roll but depending on how i swing at the ball...
I have a tendency to tee it abit low and hit up on the ball to which causes alot of spin which then gets caught in the wind and balloons!!!

Been trying to tee it up abit more and hitting through the ball which gives me the perfect trajectory and roll...

Just put the Diablo Octane Black matched with a Fubuki 70S cut to 45.5 inches... It goes slightly further than my R9 but its not as consistant as i am not comfortable with the length...
You could say that i could cut it down to 44 inches but that would alter the swing weight considerably (this happen to my 9064LS matched with RIP 60S)!

Basically find a swing weight your comfortable that fits with your tempo! Good example is that i can hit my 7i to round 140-150m on a PX 6.0 and i can almost replicate the same distance (130m)
on my gf's 7i L Flex Stock Callaway Diablo Edge irons...

Its good that drivers come with weights installed now as you can play around with the head weight to get the perfect driver setup for you

Thanks jon. I have a driver head that can interchange weight and shaft. Will try that out on a trackman later this week.

I tot if u hit up on the ball the spin will be lesser then hitting down on the ball...

i am having the same problem as well.
Can carry the ball far...but most of the time my ball is plugged on the fairway.
Went to the den before n DGman commented that i was standing too near the ball. I suppose that makes my swing too upright.
Have been working on that but i always feel like i cant reach the ball if i stand further away.
Its been a struggle nonetheless...maybe you can just relook at your stance...
and i thought you quit golf?

hey Doc, when you say 'plugged', it means the ball does a nosedive to fairway?

I set up with my driver clubface away from the ball, like 4-5 inches away, this is to make sure i hit my ball on the upswing.

THe only problem i have with this set up, if the ball is too far forward, i tend to hit a big hook.... Sad

My fault not to feedback the kind of shot that I hit with the different SW.
E9 - no matter how I change my swing cannot play a hook, best scenario is straight, or either usually fade off at 3/4 distance.
E2 - slight hook, or straight, or either slight fade at the very end of distance travelled.

bro, from your description, most likely you're pulling, I don't think you can draw and fade at the same time
