PostSubject: Tried AP2's for the first time   Fri Aug 21, 2009 6:37 pm

I was lucky today.

Was at the range and met this UK gentleman who works for Titleist in Dubai.

Anyways he was decked head to toe in Titleist and once I saw his new AP2's in the bag I asked for him to let me try.

First thing that struck me, the AP2's looks really good under the sun. Clean and neat at address. Topline not as thin as I thought they should look but still very nice.

I tried at least 20 shots with both his 7 and 4 irons and I loved the soft feel at impact.

The trajectory for the 7 and 4 irons look very right! I was very happy.

What surprised me also was how light the project X 5.5 feels. I had a good comparison cos I was at the range with my Nike Ignites for the past 2 hrs before I tried his AP's.

Therefore, I am sold. Very gian to change to this set now!

I had a good chat with him and he was telling me no need to wait for the Nov 2009 AP2's cos he cant see any difference in performance/technology, having already tried the new ones!!

hehhe

The AP2's are selling in this part of the world for 1650 SGD btw.

I believe Singapore has it a lot cheaper right?

Anyone selling or know of any demo sets/friends selling please let me know!

Thanks!

DGMan mentioned about AP2 tour edition, the head is smaller than mass produced ones... can't remember which thread (maybe the kajiki thread)... that would be even sweeter drunken

Wah you must be very strong to think the PX5.5 is light at 115g? I mean it's nothing compared to the 130+g of the DG, but still....

Anyway i think the price here not much different from what you mentioned.. if really gian might as well just buy from there. Or get your UK friend to give you some staff discount?

I love my current AP2s, thats why I'm not switching over to the new ones when they are released. They now have a special 'tour feel' thanks to DGman.

Can't hit PX shafts for nuts. Thank god the shaft options here that suit me have no upcharge.

On the other hand, I will be getting the 710MBs once they are released here. Will give a review on that later.

Haha bro, Dun suan me. I think it is definitely lighter compared to my Nike Ignite steel shaft irons.

Also, reviewing my morning "demo", I realised that I hit the AP's a lot straighter for the 4 irons than I do with my Nikes. My normal nike 4 irons plays with a slight slice most of the time.

Wonder what the reason could be, given that 20 shots is not a big sample size to make conclusions.

I think might be down to the shaft. project X 5.5 might be less stiff than the true temper stiff shaft on my nikes?

What do the experts here think?

I'm not expert.. can share views?

PX 5.0 and 5.5 are categorised as R flex by rifle.. and compared to your TT stiff, you find it easier to use mainly coz of the weight i feel. Have you ever tried 90g steel shafts? You might like them even more.. I'm currently using PX5.0, and considering switching to KBS 90 shafts

PXs are butt stiff, DGs are tip stiff. Different feel besides weight issue.

Butt stiff makes it more consistent? Less dispersion? hehe..

I had PX 6.0s on my Cally X-Forged irons. It din feel heavy but the dispersion was enormous for me. Changed them to DGX100s and they never felt better. Not a big wonder why most pros like Stuart Apples and Philly Mick are using the 7.3s.

Lighter shafts doesn't mean they are easier to use. If you already hit the ball high, having a lighter shaft will potentially give u a higher ball flight and increase spin.

Really? Sorry to go off topic here.. but this is of interest to me. Need your take on this..

I've always had a very high ball flight.. even now when i've completely changed my swing. Problem with this new swing is that i generate less speed, and the club somehow seems heavier. Tried my coach's irons that were fitted with 90g shafts, and all of a sudden it felt like i had alot more control, and was hitting the ball cleaner. I didn't specifically note if the ball flight was higher.. looked the same to me if anything. Have to add though that the dispersion on my PX is actually very tight on proper hits. Just felt more comfortable with the lighter shaft.

So should i try the switch on my irons? Don't think i want to hit it any higher than i already am doing..

Btw, isn't spin on irons a good thing?

Most amateurs hit the ball high because 1stly, they dun have a flat left wrist at impact and also they have a scooping action after that.

What shaft is your pro using? U can try and reshaft 1 iron to the same spec and test it out more before deciding on committing the whole set.

Spin is good. Too much is not when u are faced with a severe headwind.

Managed to have a good go at the AP2s yesterday, swung at about 120balls. For a beginner like me, its hard to give proper review and comments, cause when i screw up my shots, it usually very obvious. However the ones when i mange to hit sweet spot feels fantastic, a lot softer feel than the usual Ping i10 and g10 clubs that I get to use. I know the difference is mainly due to the material in the clubheads, cast vs forge. My instructor did say that i should consider the new AP2s which will be sold soon the 710s, even though i am new to the game the clubs would allow me to grow into them much better and provide more workability than game improvement irons. Still trying to be consistent with my swing.

Right now i am pretty set on forge irons, just need to decide between mizuno mx200s, mp52 or ap2s.

my 2 cents.

i am thinking of switching to forged but not sure if i can handle it...

gives me a feeling like those "blade" type of irons... need an considerable good swing and standard to handle it...

anyone can comment? forged easier to handle then cast?

bro jake, u got no problem to handle forged lah... anyway, the expert's opinion is that both are same feeling, but somehow i feel that forged is softer than cast.. furthermore, u can bend forged irons to ur desired loft and lie...

I heard from someone that the loft and lie in forge iron tend to slowly offset during use. Anybody can confirm this?

I checked online and found that PX 5.0 is considered as R-flex while 5.5 is firm, 6.0 being stiff. No big difference between 5.0 and 5.5 then?

For my driver SS at 98 mph, shld I be going for 5.0 or 5.5? Or no significant difference?

My average driver ss same as yours, don't think it'll be much difference between 5.0 and 5.5

Anyway swing speed is not the only consideration when choosing a shaft.. how quickly you transit from backswing to downswing, how aggresive you are, etc have to be assessed also. Fyi, my transition is very smooth.. in fact i usually have a microsecond pause at the top of my backswing..

Best way to know really is to try all the different ones and see which you like the most
