Guys,

Just wondering if any of you guys do weigh training at the gym and if you feel like you're game gone south ever since then.
I do 3 times a week in the gym for the past few months (lifting heavy most of the time). Feel my golf grip and swing just gone south. However it gets much better when I'm not hitting the gym for 3-4 days.

Anybody else have the same experience ?

after you build new muscles or tire out your muscles by gyming, you will lose your "touch" and a little less coordinated.. always does that to me

it depends which muscle group you are working i guess.. i rem my coach said that gym before golf is strictly prohibited as the weights will "stiffen" ur muscles and reduce flexibility..

i worked on my back muscles moderately, and i felt that my swing is better and faster.. i believe that in any sports (other than weight-lifting and body building), too heavy weights will do more harm than good.. go easy on the weights.. try out pilates, it's supposed to be good for golf.. Smile

I just run and work on my stamina....the rest of my body....I leave it to fate and let nature takes its course.

i think it depends where you are lacking in your game. Most pros go to the gym to train the strength but most part of it is in the core muscles and the lower body as well as the stamina. I don't think there is a touring pro who looks like Mr universe and plays the game well too.

The one muscular chap that comes to mind is Tiger.

Anyway, best not to do heavy weights session/tire yr muscles out before game.
If need to, do yoga or light weight training session with plenty of stretching.

Same case as mizzy... The direction goes haywire after gym but definitely more power. I guess my trunk and arms need to re-sync after gym.
And ppl always tell me tt yoga & pilates are good but too 'co-ordinated' for my liking! :p

My rhythm had remained south ever since I got a swing sock and did a few practice session with it.

Tiger and Camillo's muscle is quite prominent for golfer when put aside with say John Dally ?

when u start weight training, you will experience a dip in performance. it is just a matter of time your swing will come back and even better. other than strength, stability will improve as well

play ice hokey or baseball....the long ballers seems to play other sports also which helps with their distance.

I always thought the gym to prevent injury and conditioning ( so that u dont hit shorter & wayward when tired) more than distance.

there is a book in the library about training for golf....borrowd it twice, never try out. involves a lot of stretching and improvement of flexibility (apparently a 90 degree shoulder turn is only an OK status), training core muscles etc.

weight training is useless if you are building the wrong set of muscles for golf.

in most cases getting flexibility is the first order before building core strength at the right places.

if you closely examine the golf swing, you will find that the optimal performance comes from having a stable core from hips to legs (which also includes a balance and a good footing). the body rotation is a result of good flexibility and the distance and accuracy is a result of having the control to release that power.

when all this is achieve, you hit to the gym again to sustain.

if you want to find out how strong or weak your core is, its simple...

stand straight, lift one leg and then close your eyes, count from 1 to 10 and see how long you can stand without falling over. then do the same thing but lift the other leg. in most cases a right hander will be weak on the left leg. but most professional golfers have a natural ability to stand longer than most golfers.

this is a simple exercise and if you repeat it often, you too will benefit from the most simple core building exercise.

have fun trying.........DGman

btw shorthitter is a good coach for core and other flexibility exercises, maybe he can help.

If I may add, DGman is a good coach himself on core strength building.
Still remember the 2-3 exercises he taught me to strengthen core strength for golf and some say ahem, other area as well. Razz
