PostSubject: First set of Irons!   Mon Dec 27, 2010 11:45 pm

I've been driving off quite a bit with some borrowed old 5I and 7I from an old (literally) friend.

But I guess all good things must come to an end when my old friend would eventually want his old Irons back. So I was thinking of getting my Irons soon (possibly one and only set).

A good friend told me to look for a set of irons with deep cavity (for even weight distribution, makes it easier and more forgiving for play?). I am looking at the Nike SQ Machspeed Irons as it gets relatively good reviews from several websites and players. I am probably what most people would classify as an newbie level. So I'd thought it would be good to look at a set of clubs that would be good enough to let me master the basics as well as good enough to let me advance to a decent level of play.

frankly, i am also quite amatuer so my advice may not be very good.

I got my 1st set of iron in 2005 and still using till now, i am also looking for a new set of iron. But what i look for is something that suits me since i have a relatively good set of irons that serve me well over the years. I would highly recommend a custom set, when my budget permit, i will head over to PING at Bishan driving range and get myself fitted with a set that is truely customise to myself.

I went Bishan twice and they were really helpful and explain the clubs to me, i would suggest you drop by and take a look, they do sell by pieces so you can choose what are the clubs you want then later add on when u are better or have budget.

That customise set will be suited to you and last you for quite a while.

Disclaimer: I sucks at golf, just got back after stopping for a long while so still picking up the basic, pro dun flame me ok? Razz

Just checking if S$1100 is a decent price to pay for a brand new set of SQ Machspeed Irons w/Graphite shaft?

There's a sale at the Nike shop in Thailand so just wondering if its a decent price to pay for a set of MachSpeed w/Graphite shaft irons....

Newtogolf,

Depends on how many pieces.
But offhand, it is not cheap..

you are better off with a burner09 on sales now at golf direct.

My first iron set was worth 350++ SGD, it came with bag, 3-PW, 3 diff woods and 1 driver.....wah, bundle package....I then realized that when I search on web, the brand does not exist

It lasted around 4 years when I started to lose my 7 iron, PW, then 1 wood and later, even 8 iron....

I then managed to get a fren who was a kind soul to allow me to play with his TM300 series ......it lasted 1 year when I realized I do want to be a serious Seasoned Beginner

Here I am today.... a seasoned beginner

Its a complete set from 3I to 9I with 1 PW. The actual cost is about 23,000THB (which works out to about $1K).

Actually I'm working in Bangkok now so it doesn't really make sense if I were to buy online (which will definitely incur import taxes by Thai customs).

Hey, Duval_S, I am still using TM300. Started with that, then I itchy backside, went to "upgrade" to a graphite shafted option, after 1+ years, realized TM300 suited me better. Went back to TM300 without regrets.

Advise to TS, maybe you should experiment around with second hand clubs, or just borrow from your friends to try out. Depending on your swing and ball hitting skills, you will need to decide on graphite/steel shafts, cavity heads for maximum forgiveness. Forged or cast club heads depends on your preference and budget.

Until your swing is consistent, maybe you can consider custom fitting.

*Ouch* Understand your pain my friend. Although its not with Irons but with electronic products.

Well, would definitely want a good set to last me for a long time. Say.... 5 to 6yrs with proper maintenance?

An old friend loaned me his old Mizuno Irons (a 5I and 7I only) with graphite shaft for practice. He said its like.... over 10yrs old? According to my instructor, the irons are actually meant for ladies (which I guess would have a significant difference in weight compared to men's set?)

But I will have to return him his set eventually and get proper ones. I had tried my instructor's sets with steel shaft, didn't actually like the feel of those as it felt... 'stiff'? The whole club feels like moving as a solid stick with little 'whip' to it. Feels like I'm playing softball/baseball back in the old days~

The old sets I'm using (with graphite shaft) actually felt more whippy so I guess I'd be more inclined towards graphite shafts.

Working on my swing. Its a little crazy though.

you can check US online stores like golfsmith or golfgalaxy or golfdiscount to gauge market price. Dont forget to add in shipping costs and any local import tax.

I see. I'm not too sure of the exact pricing in Singapore and it is a well-known fact that imported goods or foreign brand carries a premium over Thai brands (yes! Even if its technically 'Made in Thailand'!)

Sneaky buggers. Sigh. They even charged me import taxes when I bought blu-rays online. 40% if anyone is curious abt the figure.

Anyway, will check out other brands. I'm looking at a very forgiving forged iron with a whippy feel and graphite shafts, so I guess my choices are somewhat limited?

As far as I know, golf clubs are more expensive in Thailand than Singapore, even if they are on sale.

I have a few kakis who actually come to Singapore to get their clubs and golf balls.

My first golf set is macam my first love.

It all started fm a distance during my younger golf days. I spent many days peeping at those golf sets....and suddenly one of them, I think 'wink' at me. So I pull myself together and the courage..to walk up to the 'golf set'.....WAH !!!! macam love at first sight !!!!

spent many hours thinking about the set, thinking how I will look after her...sorry I meant golf set, and how I will bed...sorry...I meant polish the set. Then, it all crumbled.....i realize HONMA set is not cheap.

eventuallly I settle down with my first set which I bed...sorry...I meant game with....was fm a golf outlet along tannery lane I think...it was only 350SGD...with all in.

I get my first set from Pinemeadowgolf.com, it about SGD500++ everything from driver to putter. It is a Callaway crone, not so expensive start up cost if want you give up halfway.

Wahahaha~ For me its more like a curious exploration and when I start to see my balls flying at least 50% of the time on the old Mizuno Chime-e 7I, I told myself, "THIS IS IT! Time to get my own irons!"
