PostSubject: Is there such thing as a Smart golfer?   Wed Dec 29, 2010 9:24 am

So here is what my 'messed up' brain was thinking. Smart golfer ...someone who has a weird and bad swing. But one who always manage to get up and down ....faster than most.

Take Seve for example, many times his ball land quite a way fm the target. but somehow he reaches the green faster than most (at his prime).

So is he one who is smart...in the sense, that he can come out with many shots that one does not train for ?

This came to my mind because I remembered a article where they were saying many youngsters in US have the most textbook swing. Don get me wrong, I am not against pursuing a text book swing, but just wondering if the smartness is somethign that can be trained.

There are many golfers who are trained or shall i say self taught (non-text book). Their traits are usually...

1. caddies/green keeper/helper at the club
2. little money
3. lives around golf course vacinity
4. own only one or two iron(usually given by members golfer) and unwanted golf shoes and found golf balls
5. training ground - forest or waste land
6. very good hand eyes co-ordination... probably good at games like marbles, throwing stones
7. born around the 50s or 60s
8. survivor instinct

I know a few very good golfers who can do magic like Seve, example a guy who's nickname is "cat fish" aka "torsart" in the 80's who uses only one no. 4 iron and can play a round of golf in SICC old course and his average scores is 68 to 72... he did not turn pro for he made more money having bets by giving strokes to willing golfers who do not believe his skill !
Now he owns 2 restuarant in ang moh kio......

Those who did very well and started without text book training is our very own Mardan Marmat!
Other worthy mention are the POHs family and Lims family.. Lim kian tiong, lim swee wah,Lim swee Chew, Poh eng chew, Poh eng Wah....
The nortorious one must be Chua Guan Soon.... all are self taught at their very beginning and had master the art of golf by just watching foreign pros swinging their clubs!

These are the guys whom had Kick many asses during their prime in local and asian tournament. Lim Swee Wah won a medal for singapore in the World Cup in the 80s !

The passion, love, respect for the game of golf and mostly their survivor instinct kept them at their top of the game!

I'm not sure if there's such a thing as a smart golfer (though I really enjoyed Cap's post). What I think there is is a golfer who takes smart and calculated risks. This comes with maturity and experience.

Capt, that is also the story of Yang Yong Eun, Angel Cabrera, Siddikur, Munaippa, Thaworn.

These days in Singapore, that almost never happen. Bcoz junior golfers today have dads with country club membership, practice with the best coaches paid by the state, get the best equipments, fitted by Titleist or Ping or DGman. Very few ex-caddies (older age) coming out into the national talent pipeline now, is this correct?

It would be interesting to see how successful Spore young golfers (from Quincy, Jhan to Dengshan to the young Poh kids, to Edgar and Marc Ong) will be, relative to Mardan and the Pohs and the Lims of old. In theory, they should.

I recall reading somewhere that the game of golf these days is driven more by the lure of corporate sponsorship which comes with top of the line equipment etc rather than the lure of the game itself.

The latter obviously requires the golfer to play the game with whatever equipment he has in his hands, which means that being creative and innovative is a must.

Would you consider this being a smart golfer?

The number on your scorecard doesn't take account of the following:

- Length of Drive
- How great or close your 2nd shot is.
- Number of putts
- Penalties

Its how u conjure up that number is what makes the game so wonderful and I dare say more beautiful than the so-called other 'beautiful game'.

I think that being smart is very key to surviving in many type of courses.

and to help oneself, I think one should play in as many types of courses as possible...and don stick to just the comfort zone.

for me, I do try to pick the brain of the more pro golfers on their choices of shots eg. if grass/rough is facing against you etc etc.

In fact, my most satisfying shot which I stil remember was one where I need to go under a bunch of trees fm a 2 inch rough and roll and roll onto green...fm 140m.....

Not many can have the chance to play many courses.

But I do agree with u D.

Many 'good' players from my club suffer when it comes to inter-club comps.

Thing is they have been too used to playing their home course so often that when they play elsewhere, they dunno how to tackle it. End up playing like total beginners.

You are correct, very few now...time have change and old ways are way gone ! In theory they should with all the advantage/privilege they are having! But it still boils down to hunger, dedication and survivor instinct to be successful ! a simple analogy "dont make the cut means eat "grass".... nowadays dont make cut still have meat to eat".....

Which textbook is that? Teenage Textbook?

But to add on to wat Capt said

I have heard young pros nowadays are more pre-occupied with who sponsors them and who represents them rather than whether they wanna win on tour.

If you join the tour in hope of oni making cuts, then very likely u will not be very successful.
