PostSubject: Golf Fitting   Sat Jan 22, 2011 7:48 pm

Hi Guys,

been thinking of fitting my clubs after getting the golf bug.

Tried out the PING clubs today and was quite pleased with the performance and weight.

But had a chat with one of my more experienced friend and was told that fitting would only be useful when I become more consistent in my game. I.e. sub 20 handicap...

Any advice? Thanks.

Both schools of thoughts have their rationale.
If u are not over 1.8m or shorter than 1.6m, off the rack clubs / 2nd hand set should serve u well in the interim, then u can invest on a fitting fir a solid set when u are ready

but another group here may advice if u just compromise with off the rack clubs, u may not even get to sub 20 hcp! LOL. Also some may argue it's not too pricey to fit ur clubs these days.

aiyah, if money is not an issue get fitted now. Good fitter may even allow u to bring ur clubs back for some adjustment without even changing the clubs

Yes, I think you need to have a stabilized swing before fitting is useful.

for now, even if you are beginner..getting the right shaft flex and shaft weight is still important. Skill may improve, but flexibility/strength/swing speed may not (unless you do special fitness training lah).

I agree with pushslice even though I never got a fitting for my swing after playing so long. Should really consider getting fitted

It's a chicken and egg thing for some, but there is no harm to getting fitted even if you are a beginner. By fitting I mean just the basic checks of loft, lie, grips, that kind of thing. In all probability it will help you to learn the game faster, because you are using clubs suitable for you. And when your skills have improved further, then just go for the whole hog, with shaft changes and all.

One of the important aspect of fitting IMHO, is the lie of your clubs. Getting that right helps and eliminates inconsistencies (ball left or right) cos of equipment.

This is definitely correct. I was turn away by Boss Eric the first time i wished to get my clubs fitted. He direct remarks was.. go get a coach first.

meng teck, yeap. I was told that by a fitter from Wingolf once, which was a fair comment coz I did suck at the fitting session. But the way he said it with a smirk, the tone and the eye glance that made me remember not to buy anything from Wingolf. So I get my ping stuff direct from US, and take any chance to get fitted when I travelled there. Eric does it with humor, no air. He understand business.

I would suggest at least get a consistent swing that the club fitter can profile your swing and recommend head/shaft/grip to enhance your playing experience. Also, it is important to know what you are going to achieve and be realistic about it. Club fitting is not going to make a beginner into a scratch player in a week's time.

For me, I want to whack the sweet spot, feel the softness and have the balll screaming up into the air!

I'm about 1.8m with fairly large, bony fingers. Used to have a set of US specs +1 clubs which I could use but had since gave that away. Then used my old TM300 with stock PX5.0 shaft/grip which I had a lot of diffculty as I'm not a consistent ball-striker.

So I went to consult a club fitter and found that the lie, shaft and grip were very ill-fitting. He suggested many recommendations + some other improvements and right now, I'm still getting used to the "new" clubs and easy swinging. But these modifications had indeed make my golf more enjoyable.

For me, a good club fitter is not one who overly critical of our swing forms but recognize that we are there for some constructive suggestions to see if by pairing our swings with the most suitable equipment, will eventually enhance our golfing experience.

I did some rationalising yesterday after the fitting on saturday.

Notable difference with the Ping clubs as compared to my X-20 with flex shaft is:
1) Lighter than my current irons
2) Minor offset from right to centre
3) Better feel when hitting the sweet spot

Just struggling whether it would be worth spending the thousand bucks to achieve the 3 points above....

Well if you sell the cally, it wont be one grand. Checkout golfsmith.com (order individual irons) or now that you know your ping specs, find 2nd hand set from ebay top rated seller like 3balls.

basic advice... go to BFG... if DGman will fit you, then you are ready to be fitted... if he tells you to get a coach, then get a coach (i got that from him...)

i was watching the golf channel yesterday and they showed the world's 10 awful swing...can't remember the sequence but they include:

Nancy Lopez, John Daly, Natalie Gublis, Ray Floyd, Jim Furyk, Jim Thorpe, Moe Norman, Arnold Palmer and at the top of the list Charles Barkley.

in the case of Natalie, its an extra vertebrate which cause the movement after impact. from takeaway to impact, she is as square and deliberate in her swing as it can be.

as for the rest except for Charles Barkley, their achievements speaks for itself...there is no such thing as a good or bad swing, only consistent or inconsistent swing.

if the swing is not consistent, its not possible to make a fair judgement and recommendation that will benefit the golfer. getting a coach is one way to get your swing in order before proper fitting, in most cases, the golfers i see daily have lots of potential (they have the physical conditions and aspiration). if the process from mediocre to good and from good to great stops at club fitting, then we have lost the plot.

Got the point?

i think you never make appointment snow_man.

last weekend, a teaching and playing pro made an appointment with me and the usual complaint is lack of distance off the driver. he keep looking at the club head speed reading on the trackman while concentrating on his backswing movement. After about 10 swings, i asked him if he is losing 20 meters off the tee and he says its about right. i can also see that because of his recent acquisition of a video camera, he has been analysing his own back swing and he keeps telling me about his downward movement which he is trying hard to perfect.

Thinking about Technique during the golf swing is the worse thing that can happen to any golfer. he will lose his instinct and spontaneous movement which is a strength. so basically he has effectively weaken his strength to strengthen his weakness. His strength was his perfectly timed swing and his weakness was its not the most beautiful swing in the world (but who is to judge). its like comparing Adam Scott to Jim Furyk, one is nice but not so successful, then other is considered weird but the top player in the US PGA tour in 2010.

now back to the pro last week. i got him to forget about technique by using module 1 of Instinctive Golf and in no time he was hitting it the same distance as before. then i introduce a new element once he got really warmed up. i put in a different shaft in his R9 8.5 driver (currently a Proto K 50 S). he had a few go and after about the 5 shot he was really hitting it flush and 15 meters longer. He then asked me what is the specs? He looks pretty shocked when i told him its a Proto K 70 X. He asked me if he can use this and my answer is the same. if you think you can use it, you can. If you doubt you can use it, don't even try.

Golf is more mental than anyone think. Everyone thinks they can change Charles Barkley so call swing, but in the end they all failed.

Why????

So don't feel bad if you are rejected, even the pros will get the same treatment. if you want to hear things that you like to hear rather than reality, so somewhere else. i like to continue to sleep well at night so i will not sell you something that will not make your golf game better.

DGman

PS - the pro walked out with an additional shaft (Proto K 70S) and my advice is to train with that shaft and come back for a 60S for tournaments.

How do i know if i require fitting?

I got a set of off the rack irons, and i hit a mixture of good shots and bad shots with it. So how do i know if the shaft, lie angle and grip size etc is fitting for me?

When considering of club fiiting, I'm always weight the new clubs and shaft price, I do love to keep my existing clubs but it going to give me another problem..that is my miniture storeroom will be picked and finance minister will start making noise..If I'll to change the shafts then it's going to cost me something between 50-75% of new clubs .. sighs.. What is the best way to solve this type of issue?
