PostSubject: Re: How to lower my launch angle?   Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:31 am

i was wondering if its a question for a golf pro or a club fitter or a physics scientist??

any way it will probably take all three to answer the question which is not very well asked. you will find out at the end of this post.

1. from a physics perspective.

if you address the ball in a conventional set up. right shoulder high, weightage on right, takeaway wide. by placing the ball nearer to the right or nearer to the left, you will immediately get a different launch angle. this is physics, by widening or narrowing your stance, you will also get a different launch angle. Why??? go figure it out, you don't have to be a scientist to solve this one.

the fact is a lot of players out there do not have a consistent swing and the wrong notion of hitting the ball. they literally hit down into the ball and on doing so miss the sweet spot and the intention of the golf club design by a mile. a simple test is give them a ball and ask them to throw it like a club towards the target. Got it???

2. from a technique perspective.

pro golfers spend thousands of hours playing different shots that help them get out of trouble. they have the imagination and technique to play high fade, low draw, low fade, high draw, straight low, straight high. for those who are familiar with the 4Ps that Tendy teaches, takeaway position P 1 to 4, finishing position P 1 to 4. You know its not difficult to execute different shots if your core stays the same.

but how many have the technique to influence how the ball can be shaped or how much have they been taught. the truth is most people take 10 lessons (some have never even had a lesson) and play golf for life, then they complain that they are not improving and blame their equipment, the wind, their work schedule but never themselves.

3. from an equipment perspective.

if you have understood the above 2 points, the job of a clubfitter is merely to optimise your abilities. believe me, there is no clubs or shafts or grips out there that will turn a bad shot into a good shot. we can use different configurations - loft, shaft type (kickpoint, torque [even variable] weight), stiffness, length, swingweight and all the magic words that people use. it will not turn change your input significantly.

we have a member here who loves to put sky mark on drivers, unintentionally. even if we change the weight, stiffness, kickpoint, etc...he will still continue to deliver his specialty.

not too long ago, i have a thai pro who use to be the top player in the thai national team. he came in and wanted to try the trackman. then he proceeded to hit a few drives on a 10.5 degree driver we have as a demo. hits it on the sweet spot, the ball goes 40 meters up and 236 metres long with a 4500 spin rate. he looked at me and was quite pissed. too high and too short (his usual drives are in the 270 meters range).

i looked at him and asked him..."if you break your driver in a competition and the only driver available is this one...what will you do?"...silence...then i say..."imagine the sweet spot is now 3/4 inch below the sweet spot"

he went on to try more than 10 shots....all over 260 meters under 3000 spin rate and under 30 meters.

how he did it...by applying all three aspect into his drive when he needs to.

if you understand all three perspective, you will enjoy the game better and invest your time and money where you should.

That's obvious considering all the replies are the opposite of what club fitters say.

Take one of the last replies for example. I'm told to achieve a high launch I need a level or upward attack, yet the next two paragraphs I'm told a downward attack will also give me a high launch???
It only applies if you tee up a driver. That gives you high launch low spin. If you hit down, you still get high launch, but high spin.
