Anyone using a chipper here for their approach shots ? Couple on the market by odyssey, prgr and honma. Just want to know whether anyone here have used one of these and their experiences with it.

i've got 2 at home. 1 by odyssey and 1 by wilson... its rather easy to use but like any other club in your bag, it takes some practice to get used too... the loft is the same as most 8i so you could essentially use your 8i with a putting stroke to achieve similar results...

Thanks guys...agree that we can still use the 8i to get the same outcome but somehow I find it easier to address due to it's putter-like shape and hence easier to use. Although I know some golfers still frown upon using chippers....

I've not used one but have seen them in action decades ago, it's an old product given a new lease of life. From what I understand, you use the same stroke for a chipper as with a putter since the chipper's shaft is almost as short as that of a putter. The wider sole (if I remember correctly) stops the chipper from stubbing into the ground.

Before you go get yourself a chipper, look to the hybrid in your bag. The shaft may be longer, but just grip down and use a putting stroke and see if you achieve a similar result as with the chipper. Who knows, you may be pleased enough with the results that you may not need a chipper. Very Happy

Not sure though how the ball comes off a chipper versus a hybrid though.

Thanks bro. Will try both n give a fr. Was given a honma chipper as a gift n would be good to see how it does compared to a choked down hybrid.

bought one at CC for $6, works exactly like a putter (about 1 inch longer), feels like a putter ..... The accuracy is very good but distance control for me is bad. just need more practice. Somehow screws with my putting though.

There's a thread on the Niblick, right? That's Cleveland's chipper.

I feel a chipper will restrict what you can do... if you need the ball to roll lesser, it will be difficult to do it with the chipper....

Hit softer lor. You wont hit a putter full strength when the hole is just 6 ft in front of you right? Well, it is just a matter of practice and practice until you are familiar with it. Just like any other clubs in your bag.

Hi,

been using the Cleveland Niblick chipper for about 1 yr. bought it at Pan West. after practising for awhile, it really saves me many shots during short game.

previously always have trouble chipping using wedges but with the chipper i am doing 1 chip and 1 put for most of my short games.

However for chipper, you really need to practise and know the amount of strength to use. like all clubs, the more you practise the better you can handle it.

Never be put down with what others say like chipper is for lousy players etc etc. So long it saves you shots, who cares....

hahahaha.

What i mean is in situation where there is little green and lots of rough btween ball and hole... if need the ball to carry more, the roll will increase as well... like wat u said, have to control the strength... but there is also a limit what you can do .....

I have the odessey one and love it. A few times nearly chip to the hole. Main diff between niblick and odyssey's is the lie. Odyssey's lie is putter lie so the stroke is putter stroke and more easy to control.

That beings said, for me, i find it hard to do longer than 15m for the odyssey chipper as the lie and shape and weight prevent me from hitting far. I still rely on wedges for that shot. But for shots from the fringe of the green, its perfect. It also adds spin to the ball so the ball does not roll much.h

Weesern, in that situation I would bypass the chipper and go back to my 60 L wedge. Different situation demands different action. A perfect situation to use the chipper is when there is lots of green and just 1-2 metre or less of rough into the green. Just have to rise to the occassion and see which is best. Good golf ahead. cheers
