PostSubject: Guide to Chatuchak Market   Sun Feb 20, 2011 2:34 pm

just back from BBK on the weekend, this is my attempt to help others to walk this massive market without geting lost.....

basic knowledge: the best way to get around BBK is by taking either the BTS or MRT. BTS= trams that are above ground. MRT= trains that are underground.

before getting there: take a bag pack to carry your goods, this place accepts CASH only, if can, clear your bowels in the morning, if not bring the essentials...

getting there: just go the Saladaeng station on the SILOM Line (BTS), this BTS line share with the MRT Line that will get you to the market. From the Saladaeng station, u will need to walk abt a minute to get to the underground MRT. Thereafter, u can catch the train to the market by alighting at the Kampangpetch station (there is a station before this station stating the marketdo not alight here) by alighting at the Kampangpetch station puts u right in front of the market. Cost of the ride is 40B pax. Abt 20-30mins

once there, its good to find a info counter n get a map of the market, the market is separated by the main road that splits the market from the small outer ring and the massive inner maze of shops. From the station u are alighting, u will be facing section 2 of the outer ring n section 26 of the inner maze....

there are many approaches depending on the time u arrive at this market...

1) if u arrive in the morning, say 8-9am, u can have breakfast at the nearby stalls n proceed with the INNER maze first (cos at this time, though not all stalls are opened but market is not that crowded n easier to walk, there are still ample stalls to look see). From section 26-24-23-22-21-20-18-16-14 -12, all are clothing n accessories, section 10-8 are the odds n ends stuff (like plates, towels, cups etc), section 9-11-13-15 are the pets sections, follow by section 17-19-20-22-24-25 which are clothing n accessories again. Once u FINISH the inner maze, if u still have some walking marbles left, then do the outer ring, if u are not into used clothes, skip section 4, if u are not into furniture, skip section 7.....

2) if u arrive in the afternoon, i would prefer to do the outer ring first cos its less humid than the inner maze....

there are a few dispatching services available in the market to send your goods back home if u are finger happy n buys tons of stuff, the rates are abt the same (70-80B per kg in the jumbo box)

if u wanna take taxi back, be prepared to pay fixed rates rather than the meter rates.....

what i buy: mostly clothes for the kids, for the adults, t-shirts, casual wear, belts, polos, shorts, shoes.... dun really like the business shirts or pants there

the prices in the market is at least 100% off than the roadside stalls in Patpong.... n those multi-colored plastic belts, now i know the price of each belt......hahaha

my suggestion: take your time, if tired, just go to one of the drinks stalls to rest n chill (section 7 have some cool stalls)

slinger this is a great guide to chatuchak market...

FYI, for those who are in chatuchak market, u can drink the world best iced tea, taste the world best coconut ice cream (very refreshing), and eat the world best fried squid eggs (it is a delicacy) with just $5 and all within 10 steps of each other.

this spot where u can do all this, just come out and turn left from kamphaeng phet MRT. There will be a booth asking u to adopt some kittens. walk 10 metres forward and u should be able to see the 3 stalls selling the different things mentioned.

Coconut ice cream quite common ard BKK. Some serve it with glutinous rice, crushed peanuts and tapioca...for a measly 10 baht.

Everytime i am in BKK, I go to this massage place. Highly recommended

King and I Spa & Massage,

Sukhumvit Soi 12, Bangkok, 10110. Tel: (02) 252-5248, (02) 252-7955. Located 5 minutes' walking distance from Asoke BTS Skytrain station, at corner of Sukhumvit and Soi 12, in Sukhumit Plaza (where you'll also find great Korean and Japanese restaurants). Look for the small sign. Offers Thai, oil, foot, and aromatherapy massage. Also facial and body scrub treatments. Nice atmosphere and affordably priced. Open 10 am - midnight.
